It’s interesting how badly the new Smart-based Twingos sell in some countries. In my native the Netherlands it has slightly over 1% market share (total market), which is less that previous gen Twingos. Citroën C1: almost 1%. Which is 3 times more than the Hyundai Tucson.

To be fair, we’ve got some rather stringent emissions taxes, meaning efficient small cars do well... and larger cars are imported used from Germany/France/ when they’re a few years old. Mostly German and French cars though.

Looking at the page again, I’ve just realised that it’s just for November! The actual YTD figures (you have to change the first drop down to 2018-01) show the only unicorns as Opel Combo, Nissan Note, Merc SL, Maybach, Ford Courier (van based thing), misc Dodge, Bentley Mulsanne.

Also, the fuel cell Toyota Mirai outsells the Citroen C5. They really don’t like most French cars in Sweden.

Not a single T wingo though.

I’ve been drilling down through all the nyregistringar and they’re really interesting.

For example, total Passat sales were 13,075 of which 3,915 are Hybridfordon som är externt laddbara (hybridvehicles which are externally rechargeable or PHEVs) and 6,103 were diesel

Of 5,088 Aurises 4,471 are hybrids (or Hybridfordon som inte är externt laddbara if you’re practicing your Swedish)

The vast majority of traditional hybrids are by Toyota. Just five Mondeo hybrids were sold.

Four electric Smarts were sold and surprisingly 68 e-Ups.

The only ethanol car ( etanolbil ) is the Golf and 918 were sold.

The Citroën C5 was discontinued in 2017 (excluding China) after almost a decade on the market, so it not selling well in November 2018 in Sweden isn’t that odd ;) Similar thing with the Peugeot 508, is the new gen at the dealerships yet? I don’t believe it is.

The Twingo though, I can understand people not buying the third gen. Not that competitive, and lacking the charm if a car like the Fiat 500.

Looking at the Netherlands, I except 90+% of Toyota Auris sales are hybrids too. Probably 95+% . And it’s been like that for years. The hybrid drivetrain is the only unique selling point of that car; a Prius drivetrain without the stigma of the Prius design, and very cheap (relatively) due to emissions related taxation being very kind to a well designed hybrid.
