No hard feelings. I’m a middle school teacher and my students have strong feelings about me, mostly good, I think. Some of the students I’ve had the biggest contests of will with I’ve seen later and it’s been all hugs. But it’s something I worry about because a small portion of the students who come through are most definitely unhinged emotionally. And President Trump’s solution is for me to buy a sidearm and wear it at school. I can’t see that.

Yeah, I can see that school violence is something that teachers feel a lot about. I hope you and your colleagues can be as strong an influence for good in those kids’ lives as you strive to be.

We (educators) all operate on a sliding scale of how much of ourselves we want to put into the relationships we have with the students, and that’s going to be determined to a large extent by what our capacities are; how we’re wired. And the slider moves, one way or the other, as we gain experience in life and in the classroom. For me, the relationships are Job 0 and the math is Job 1 . And the kids pick up on that. We are under their microscopes and they pick up things about us that are definite things, even if the kids don’t understand what they’re picking up. And sometimes, what the kids pick up is genuinely unreasonable or unfair. When those things happen, on my part, I try to be quick and thorough about owning them in order to credit the kids for whatever they might have picked up. All of this can be tremendously liberating, by the way... In any relationship, all we can do is our best and hope that the other person or people realize that our best is what we’re doing, even when the effort comes up short.
