Yeah, ancient, I know. But it was appropriate. Yesterday I flew into Bologna airport in the northern part of Italy. In some airports you get guided to your parking spot by a so-called “follow-me” car. The last time I went to Bologna we got an old Fiat to guide us in. This time though... I saw something low to the ground, in bright colors and some familiar lines, and if I could download the cockpit voice recorder myself I’m certain you’d hear me say “Pretty sure that’s a Lambo” to my co-pilot.

It was a nice surprise. Unfortunately it didn’t pull away in a sporty manner to let us hear a nice engine note.

That must be torture, just driving a lambo around at parking lot speeds all day.

What planes do you fly?

It might run up alongside a jet as well.

Do they still do that, have cars driving alongside them?

Nobody ever said Italy made efficient use of tax money.

I wonder if, when there isn’t any air traffic, they let them blow down the runway full throttle.

“uh..... Huracan Flight LP610....taxiway A to runway 12, and you are cleared for takeoff and landing. Exit runway to Taxiway K1 .”

As far as I am aware, only for some military or ex-military jets. I think the B-52 used to have or still has spotter cars every now and then, and the U-2 high altitude recon plane as well (also in the NASA version).

CRJ 700 & 900 :). Old enough to keep you busy with less automation , young enough to have a few gadgets like head-up display and such. Nice planes to fly.

There is so much car stuff going on in the Emilia Romagna that they even have tourist programmes around what they call terra di motori (more or less, “motor country”).

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lamborghini i s l o a n i n g that car at zero cost to the airport, just as a PR stunt.

Of course let’s not forget that Sant’Agata Bolognese, home to Lamborghini, is part of Bologna...

I read an article recently about an airline company picking some high mileage people in Porsches (maybe it was Delta?) at the planes and driving them to their next destination. Gate, baggage claim, another plane etc. Anyway, in that article the driver mentioned she gets to go hammer down the highway every once in a while because the low speeds and constant stopping wasn't good for the engine. I bet this situation is similar.

Oh, I know. I was just at the Enzo museum in Modena last month.

Yeah, it's been there for a while now apparently, I just hadn't had the luck to see it before.

Yeah, luxury/high-end cars are nothing special in general at airports and for handling agencies to use for their clients. A few of my friends fly business jets and I believe that for example in Dubai, even the crew got picked up from and driven to their plane by a Rolls Royce Phantom and a Maybach quite regularly. My home airport uses Panameras for VIPs and people willing to pay the money for that type of attention.

It’s just not very common to see them in this role, guiding airplanes. As mentioned, Bologna is pretty much home to Lamborghini so I'm sure it has something to do with it.

Oh yeah sorry I meant they were similar situations in that the driver of the lambo might also get to go run it hard a bit like the Porsche driver said.
