RIP my friend’s Fusion. Sometime after parking it for the night on Tuesday  a rat climbed in and chewed through a critical part of the hybrid system. Blew the rat’s head clean off and fried the electrics. Insurance is totalling the car as it’s a $5,000 fix.

It’s a 2010 with only 115k miles on it.

Worst part is, he only had five months of payments left.

Hybrid/electric cars are safe, though. One just has to disconnect the battery before performing any work. If this rat valued its life it would've done so before chewing on the motor drive cables.

There is a person on our neighborhood email group that is trying to get rats to stop living in their engine bay. Buggers have already caused $600 in damage. As the thread was going around the neighborhood, somebody was talking about a humane way to deal with the problem. I’m as humane as the next guy, but screw that. Just kill the little bastards. There are plenty more. I had a rat inside my Odyssey for three days before I finally killed it. He was chewing on the rubber seatbelt mount covers and eating into the water bottles in the back.

My car sat for like five months before I got it. Something ma de nest in the engine bay. No electrical issues thank God but the sound deadening on the hood is torn to shreds.

see... my cat knows that.... it never chews plugged in cables (it can smell the current or something i guess)

murders the shit out of anything left unplugged for 2 minutes tho.... stupid cat

but yeah... im very wary of lectrickery (funny considering i spend half my work day tinkering on live robotics... lot of lectrickery in those... i dont think about it too much)

Ouch! I found once found a headless rat from my friend’s Volvo C70. It had tried to build its house inside the engine compartment. Apparently the engine moves so much that the clearance between the subframe and a belt pulley isn’t enough for a rat’s head. T h e p o o r h e a d l e s s r a t h a d b e e n trave ling over the sub f r a m e f o r w h i l e . . .

- My car’s engine compartment smells like warm rat poop.

So we now officially found a use for all those Fusion Hybrids.  High tech rat trap.
