That moment when you realize your engine is bored 60 thousandths over and the pistons you bought don't fit

The bore was my downfall as well, I originally intended to do a ball hone and run it, but on tear-down I found out that someone had already done that once, and the piston to bore clearance was at its maximum already, so it needed bored. That paired with the mis-mash of random rods in it led to buying rods and pistons and before long the “crank needs polished” turned into “why not just buy a crank and build a stroker”

That’s what the paint is for!

I’m just gonna hone the block and re-ring it

I’m just gonna bore it 010

I’m just gonna have the crank turned

Just a mild cam

May as well use roller rockers since I need new anyways

Just a mild port

These bolt-on headers will totally be enough

I’m just gonna bore it 020

Guess I need to mill the heads

Whoops, guess I need larger valves

These 1.8's will be quieter than my 1.6 rockers

A little more overlap never hurt anybody, this’ll sell easy on eBay

Boy I wish I had a bit more torque

Whoops, guess I need new conrods

325. I bet there’s enough meat left to bore it just a little more...

Oh the top-end build was planned all along, the bottom-end work was the surprise. The extra cost if anything is taking away from top-end bits.

“I totally planned on the top-end build.”

“Whoops, guess I’ll have to do the bottom end too.”

“Well I probably should beef up the suspension for the power...”

“May as well freshen up the interior...”

You don’t have to believe me (it is the internet after all) but the original plan was quick bottom end refresh then actually do a nice cam and head setup.

The suspension is already rebuilt and the interior mint :)

Dude, if I didn’t believe you, the thing would be on a rotisserie by now. ;)

But by saying “it’ll just be X” you have now guaranteed self-inflected project creep. It’s like taunting Murphy, except while holding your wallet over an open fire.
