“ According to him, the cars were owned by a retired employee from the dealership building up the collection with the goal of owning one first-gen MR2 (otherwise known as the AW11) from each year of production. The specs for the cars traded in are as follows:
A 1985 fixed-roof sunroof car painted in yellow with over 207,000 miles on the clock. It sports aftermarket wheels, and was originally painted silver. According to Japanese Nostalgic Car, it’s the only car out of this collection that’s been modified from stock.
A 1986 fixed-roof car with no sunroof painted in red, with around 140,000 miles on the odometer. It was apparently the owner’s favorite out of the bunch, with regular visits to car shows and other events.
A 1987 targa model painted in white sporting just 80,500 miles. It sports the OEM three-spoke wheels and an automatic transmission.
A 1988 targa model also painted in white, and also equipped with an automatic transmission. This one sports phone dial wheels and a factory supercharged engine—the only car here that’s not naturally aspirated. It has just 78,500 miles on the odometer.
A 1989 targa model painted in a lovely shade of sky blue, equipped with the five-speed manual transmission. This is the cleanest, lowest-mileage car of the bunch, with just 28,000 miles on the clock.
Brotherton says the former owner replaced his collection with a single 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata with 10,000 miles on the clock.“

It wasn’t even the new Miata with a power bump...

Given the guy is retired, maybe maintenance caught up with him and he gave up on collecting? I hope that never happens to me!

Maybe he suddenly realized he wasn’t Multiple Man, with the ability to drive all of them at once, and that he didn’t have a whole lot of variety for his “drive different one every day” scheme.

Holy cow. MR2 me, please.

20 years they’ll be worth maybe 20k each and the Miata will be worth 5k.

I get why... but I feel like he could have done better. Find a Toyota dealer that has the cash and interest in a collection like this and get a brand new FRS out of it.

Pretty sure this deserves a place among the worst trade deals in the history of trade deals .

I mean, the last one in the list had 28k(!!) on it. A nearly 30 year old MR2 with 18k more miles on it than the used ND that he traded it for (that’s going to bottom out fast in price due to the refresh). None of this makes sense.

Plenty of reasons why. 5 cars is a lot to look after. Got bored of them after completing the set. Getting older.
Just seems like the owner could have gotten a better deal if they wanted, but maybe they just didn’t want to go through the hassle either.

surprised he didn’t keep his “favorite” one.

Yeah, but he’s already retired, and his wife died 2 years ago . In 20 years, he’ll probably be dead 10 years. May as well go with something low effort and see the MR2s go to someone who will care for them.

Old Mate believed he was making a rational choice. I believe he was too.
He took the easy way out in order to get what he needed.
His alternative would be to sell each car individually on CL or similar or work with a specialist auction house somewhere miles away and then take whatever you get. Both options mean more time, more angst and probably not much more money. And then you’d still have to buy another car.
This way everything was probably sorted in one genial afternoon. No stress, no fuss.

You get out of here with your reasonable response!

Better this than that damn Ron guy who destroyed hundreds of cars by letting them rot in his yard for decades.

Haha! You’re so right. I wonder if those MR2s bought him happiness overall, even after the realization that he can’t take them with him.

I don’t get it. How is this a bad deal? He was paying insurance on 5 cars, and each of those cars on average is probably not wort much more than $4000-5000 if you were trying to sell them on craigs list. Even if it was, he’s an old guy and probably didn’t want to fuck around with selling every individual car privately. I can’t even imagine amount of maintenance 5 cars that old require. This was a logical move.

This guy left some money on the table. I would have least tried to barter for a new Miata... 2016 with 10k miles? How much is that worth? 20k at best?

I heard this is only a couple hours away from me. If Oppo wanted to arrange a group buy...

Nope. He couldve traded them for a Dodge Journey.
