hmmmm... i have a feeling if i park that on my driveway snug against the garden gate.... id still be blocking the sidewalk
(edit).. well... snug against where my gate should be (funny story that... i may have once forgotten to open it before cycling through it full speed.... why no ociffer i hadnt been drinking)
(course it was pretty much wrecked before that too.. but after that it was dead so i took it off.... left the metal swing arms on the post tho.... sometime later i tripped over one of them taking the bin out and tore a muscle in my shoulder and missed two months of work....... took them off after that....)

For some reason I’m really feeling the need to visit Wally World. That thing would make a great road trip car, if you can afford the gas.

Very cool, NP at the current bid, but a good chance someone will see it as some kind of ironic statement and overbid it. This is kind of thing my dad would have loved to find when he was dabbling in old Fords when I was a kid.
I know some see Marti reports as the ultimate in wingadinga dorkiness, but I wish such minutiae was available for every car.

good news is it seats 6. divide the fuel costs evenly.
I’m surprised it doesn’t have a jump seat in the back. Promotional material insinuates that you can trow kids back there. I guess seat belts, and cushions aren’t required fro kids.

For $4400, sure, why not? If it gets to double that, somebody is reminiscing through rose-colored glasses. This is the bottom rung of the ladder, and 1971 is when the top engines were neutered a bit.
More importantly for you, though, thoughts on this? The current bid is a non-starter obviously, but I’m curious where this will end up - it’s rough.

Reading the BaT ad it was ordered by a county coroner so no back seats needed, just cargo room. And a big honking engine. In ‘71 Ford hadn’t yet decreased compression ratios or begun the slide to malaise (that happened in ‘72) so it’s probably a pretty stout lump. When we were kids seat belts were those weird things that were jammed down between the seat cushions.

The Country Sedan was the bottom of the line - think Chevy Biscayne, or Ford Custom. You probably need to move up a level or two to get that 3rd row, I guess?

I could see the wagon hitting 10K. It might even be worth that to a real fanatic, but anything more is pushing it IMO.
I’d rather have the 60 Country Sedan my dad had when I was a kid/teen - insanely low survival rates and unique styling made it a crowd pleaser even 25 years ago. It was a similar Ford tomato red as the 70 above (white two tone), unfortunately, sold on a whim and I never saw it again. Heck, I haven’t seen another 60 Ford wagon in person since I last saw that car.
I know the 190SL/W113 market has cooled significantly, not sure if the 300SL is impacted at all, but rising 300SL prices did help the others along. I swear I’ve read about that exact car before, maybe in “The Star” some years ago. I could see it in the 7 figure neighborhood - patina is still big these days, and if I had it, I’d just clean it and go over it mechanically.

Very nice looking car. I give it a Nice Price of up to US$15
,000.
I see the current bid is still below $5000.
Though I have to say for me, this would only be an occasional weekend car since that 429 combined with the slushbox likely drinks fuel like there’s no tomorrow.
http://www.fuelly.com/car/ford/galaxie_500
If I were to daily drive this, I’m guessing it would cost me an extra $300/month in fuel.

The listing has been up for 3 hours - 111 comments, and $327k.
I know patina is big, but I see some rust on that - there’s so much work to do on that thing, I would just restore it, personally. But restore it to a nice driver standard, not a trailer queen.
There’s a guy near me who has a roadster. With a bike rack. Which I’ve seen on Chicago interstates during rush hour. Now THAT is living.

It’s got a long way to go - I suspect the $12-15k range is probably about right, though it’s more than I would pay for it myself.
I think you’d have to be pretty gentle on the throttle to get double digit MPG out of this thing.

And a Fatstang won’t cut it. Still too bigly.

I’d pay 327K for it, and I’d have to mortgage my life to do it.
The problem with a restoration is doing it to a lesser standard doesn’t help value, so you’d just be doing it for yourself. You can restore a common old car to driver quality, but something like this seems to have maybe three price points - original, messed up, and restored properly. I can deal with rust and wear, so long as it is structurally fine. A quality specialist restoration will run mid 6 figures or maybe more , so one has to be careful what they pay, unless they plan to keep it forever as a labor of love.
I think I’ve only seen a roadster on the road a couple times, ever, and I think it was the same car, there’s a white one somewhere near me. . I saw a coupe on I90 near where I live (just east of Seattle) years ago, too. Maybe the best odd sighting was a woman who looked somewhat like a 70s era Jackie Onassis driving a BMW 507 near where I live - she’s doing it right.

Back in the 70s you could pick those things up for like 5K, I think. Definitely some good timing to be had at that time.
In a way, having it a little crusty would also troll some of the old guard who want everything to be pristine. There’s a guy in my local MBCA chapter who has a 540K Special Roadster - a real one. Something like a 20 year restoration project, spent an immense amount to get it perfect, and as far as I know, it is never driven . I’d be even more impressed by an original/slightly decayed example that starts and drives now and then.

Well I currently spend $120-$150/month on fuel on a car that I’m averaging 33mpg. So when I say it would add $300/month, it means I think my total spend would be $420-$450/month in fuel... meaning I’m guessing I would get 10-11mpg.
But yeah, even that might be optimistic and my real fuel
spend would be closer to $50
0-$600/month with this thing.
