I think I’ve mentioned before
getting architectural drawings in “exotic” formats. Image files including .bmp, drawings made with the line tools in Word... new one today
. Image pasted into Excel document, no other data.

Everything we send out is PDFs.
It may be a scan of a drawing from the 1950’s, but it’s a PDF.

Okay, but it gets better. They sent two drawings, the other of which is an 11mb .tif scan with dimensions written on an undimensioned drawing in pen. None of which actually pertains to our part of the project.

This was the aforementioned Excel and a .tif of a scanned drawing with pen notes
(11MB!)
, neither of which had any relevant info to our part of the project whatsoever.

I would joke that the last guys had the excuse of being Polish for being eccentric enough to be sending drawings in .bmp, but this is actually a US government customer doing this.
Strangely enough our contact guy might be Polish this time as well
, but I’m not sure he’s the guilty party.

I’ve had people send me spreadsheets inside of Powerpoint slides with active embedding/linking.
Basically what would have been a 50KB Excel sheet is now a 5MB slide for no apparent reason.
That’s the finance version of what you just got. Or they send me an Excel sheet that’s been pasted special as an image. It’s like “Here, go rebuild this from scratch since nobody can find the original.”

That’s fairly horrible. At least you had some parameters, though, I’d assume - overall outside dimensions, etc., to just fill in inside.
The tricky thing in my business is that we don’t actually need all the dimensions (typically), so we often have to go on say-so that there isn’t anything in the way of a planned setup. Doodles with very little info are stock in trade, and I sometimes
have to send things out with “?” dimensions to be filled in... which sometimes then get ignored because “they don’t matter”. Except when they do.

I’ve had lenders send me the plans & specs for a new construction appraisal, where the plans are sketched out on lined paper, with the specs, what is to be installed in the home, just a price break-down for materials. So, $6,000 for floor coverings. Are they putting in tile, carpet or hardwood? No idea. Calls to the builder go unanswered for two weeks. Lender asks what the delay is.

So I don’t like bar seating in kitchens, though I understand that is a matter of personal preference. I especially don’t like it when they have room not just for a breakfast nook, but a decent sized table. The real crime seems to be that they put the chairs on the wrong side, so that they will be in the way any time you actually wanted to use the island for any sort of food prep.
Also their stairs seem too short, and appear to dead end into an exterior wall?

Here, go rebuild this from scratch since nobody can find the original.
I’ve had this happen numerous times with part drawings, because some of our “artists” were a little less than doctrinaire about saving CAD files where somebody could, I dunno, FUCKING FIND THEM

We expressly save to AutoCAD 2007, IIRC, due to paranoia about who might need to open it. Of course, our laser contractor needs R12 DXF with lines only when we want to make laser-cut parts...
Actually, I can see a reason for saving it into an Office document. Several. Everybody can open them one way or another, some people get confused by pictures, it allows dropping text box notes on the file, it allows for (some) security/change tracking, and if you don’t have Acrobat to be able to edit it.... then again, Excel was what this was. Not Word, Excel.

Yes, really. I sometimes
get multiple sketches with Word tools or Word documents with image pasted in a year. Mostly the former, mostly exported to PDF first, so actual image in Word file is an aberration, but that’s where some things come from.

multiple sources - but all professional companies, in theory.

I bitch, but we regularly save back to v. 2004 for the same reason. At that point, it’s less about maintaining ACAD compatibility, and more about just stripping down the files to the bare minimum of data. Topo files are huge sometimes.

front to back is adjustable but width is limited by the property setbacks. I’ve been working on the floor plan in sketchup and the dimensions are getting very particular so certain things will line up or be centered.

There’s a sort-of-simple explanation, which is that usually we’re doing setups well after a building has gone up. Which means the majordomos running the projects may have architectural data at their disposal, or may not, and the architect and builder are long out of the picture. In short, we’re dealing with lab divisions and others who have bankroll, but are only dealing with building management in a partial sort of way a lot of the time, and even when we’re working with *new* stuff, there’s usually a layer of bureaucracy between us and the building process.
When we do have contact with the builder/a builder, it’s often because they’re a second string doing a remodel, or they’re running the whole process and want specifics from us to interpret and turn back around.
The problem then sometimes becomes information excess. Having a whole project plan that I then have to shave external references out of to make a simple whole plan for our stuff... and then things change.

Excel is easier than W ord, it’s one continuous screen instead of forcing it to fit on an 8.5x11, it’s easier to put the text wherever you want to m ake it easier to read, etc. If you’re only concerned about electronic viewing, excel is much better than word for something like that IMO.
*just a commentary on excel vs word, not whether either is the appropriate format.
RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht

12/12/2018 at 13:47 | 0 |
You know what’s a great image viewing format? An image, that’s what.
But yes, assuming somebody wanted the above Office protections and had the extremely specific needs for electronic viewing indicated above, *and* had full Office but not Acrobat, I can see a teensy-tiny rationale.
A rationale that our guy did not have if he was sending me tiffs, but somebody who isn’t him might be the One True Excel Architecture Drawing Man. It could happen.

. It is in the Excel file for no discernible
