After 240 miles of freeway driving I’m ready to draw conclusions.

have you turned into a space crab doctor yet?

Are the seats as ass numbing as the last gen?

Do they still sell the true base model that sits really low? This looks lifted.

Is rental spec worth the price they ask for a new one?

how much air time does it get when you miss an off ramp?

is that what they’re driving these days?
times are tough for us all

No I have no purchased a 1984 4wd Tercel.

Using a base Taco for highway driving is like...I dunno...using a Miata for mountain snow driving or something.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 20:58 |

yet...

This is a 4x4 with steel wheels and shit tires. A two door 2x4 is still available but hard to find.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 20:59 |

No. I would like keyless entry and a slightly nicer interior, and alloy wheels.

10/10 kinda like the seats, although they are a bit on the short side.

I thought “base” and “rental spec” implied that it was cheap, but god damn these things start at 40k in Canada.

That’s a big no. The RWD Taco sits MUCH higher than the previous gen RWD (2005-2014). I have a photo of my parked next to one somewhere on some phone...
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:01 |

I would not’ve guessed you’d get a Tacoma as a rental
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:02 |

Yes, so logically the best way to test it out.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:03 |

Generally $ 30-32 k US dollars.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:03 |

We had an older low Tacoma, and I would have much preferred it to be a PreRunner. Getting in and out of a truck dozens of time is easier when you just slide in vs drop in.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:04 |

I’m at about 20 mpg at 50-75 mph. Will know better after my first fill up.

You parked on a phone?!

I’ve seen them at Denver and got this one in Sacramento. It looks like they drove it from Argentina tho.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:08 |

You make it sound like a caged track car.... Just because it wasn’t lifted 16 feet doesn’t mean that it’s * low*

Could three adults sit across the bench in comfort?
Also, is there bench seating?
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:10 |

2WDs look like 4x4s now though, they don’t look very low

![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:13 |

1) No.
2) If base, possibly.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:13 |

In the back? The front is two bucket seats. The rear is still pretty tight for anybody over 5- 9 or so. 3 across in the back would be fully squished together.

Keep the tip!

I can answer from mine, sort of. Around town it’s fine for 5 but I took 5 people from Portland to Shasta and reviews from the back seat(two of the occupants being chicks on the small side, one being a very normal sized guy) were not very positive. I also kept elbowing the middle occupants feet when shifting because the console was apparently the best spot for them.
I do not believe a front bench is available.

Lifted like 4-inches, it’s a big enough difference to be noticeable. I much preferred our full size trucks because of it. It’s not a sports car, it doesn’t need to be low.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:22 |

Not really. I have an uncle who bought a Frontier for that very reason. He uses a ladder rack for his work truck, and with the 2wd Frontier he doesn’t have to stand on a ladder to get his ladder. Lol.

Tacomas start around $30k, but I’ve never seen one less than $37k here in Saskatchewan.

Overall, did you like it?
I test drove a 2018 double cab with long bed. It felt so narrow inside - I’m coming from a 2000 Tundra and I figured these caught up in size. That was a solid no though.
Did you like the power? Again, tundra only has 240hp I think, but it feels more responsive and quicker, even with the ancient transmission and a tired engine.
I have a feeling that Camry 3.5L V6 was not the best engine for that truck.
That’s why we kept the 2000 tundra and bought a 2018 Tundra SR5 TRD Sport.

Chevy Colorado>Tacoma
Not impressed with new engine.
Yes feels narrow, but easy to drive in town.
Back seat rom still for children.
As a whole package it’s okay but not $32k okay. I would probably get a Colorado if shopping for something this size.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 21:52 |

Not bad at all actually.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:01 |

Oh I fucked up , I was looking at the Tundra on Toyota’s site.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:02 |
|
Sure. That’s all 90% of trucks ever see anyway. :P
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:09 |
|
Do you feel super duper safe?
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:09 |
|
So what you’re saying is: get a 4Runner and trailer instead.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:12 |
|
Yes a used 4Runner is a better value too.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:13 |
|
I didn’t feel any safer or less safe than usual.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:15 |

It should have TSS Toyota Superduper Safe standard... is the grille emblem shiny with lasers behind it?
There is a hilarious thread in tw where someone drove into a wall of boxes and is complaining that it didn’t stop. Thread is a garbage fire like only tw can..
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:17 |

It has radar cruise control so I’m guessing it has twss.
![]() 12/11/2018 at 22:51 |

It’s sta ndard as of 2018. What does the dash look like? Dials and levers for hvac?

Does it have intermittent wipers? I rented one that only had low and high options for the wipers

The Tacoma’s automatic s ucks.

You are not wrong. It feels like it’s geared for fuel economy.

Clearly. Was hunting all over the place in my short test drive. I guess there’s a TSB out to try to make it better.
3 pedals makes it better. =)
