... I dare say that it is nigh unacceptable for these many new luxury or performance sportbacks/cross-things/hatchbackies/it’s-really-a-wagon vehicles that have a backseat that’s smaller than an older Altezza’s.

Kinja'd!!!

He’s scrunches his neck down and forward so he can fit a finger’s width over his head and says, “Plenty of room!!!”

And many of these examples are massive vehicles in comparison. You get all the latest tech, luxurious interior, maybe some real wood! Just no room for more than two partial adults to enjoy it. It’s like they’re designing people OUT of cars. But these vehicles are supposed to be practical, right?

Well anyway, hope you’re all doing well out there.

Selling cars to boomers means 1-2 passengers 95% of the time.

I’m convinced this is driving the market now, despite all the talk of aiming at “lifetime customers”

Maybe, but I know plenty of people like my parents, who got an even BIGGER vehicle after all the kids left because they wanted to haul around grandchildren.

In the car’s defense, that is Doug’s regular posture.

My folks just put the kids in the Audi Q5. Which is big enough for grandkids but that’s about it :D

Then they spend 30 minutes cleaning out all the dirt because they forgot what normal life was like before a cream colored interior.

When they put the Mk2 Skoda Superb up against the Audi A6 and the Bentley Contents, they found the Skoda had the most head and legroom.

Or, because their kid just quit his part time job and is contemplating dropping out of college for the 4th time with no plan to do anything else, despite being in his early 30s.

This is a real scenario that I am aware of. They have a lot more patience than I would in that situation.

The older I get, the less I care about the back seat of my vehicles. At 22, I would have wanted room to transport my friends. At 32, I just meet people at the location we're going, plus I'm just less social in general.

But, you do things. You didn’t suggest that you could become a “professional son” and get paid to just hang around the house and keep the TV warm and dispose of any leftover food.

I have someone in my totally-not-my extended family who was “ perpetually  under- employed,” moved back in in his 50s, waited out for his parent’s life to end, then somehow ended up with the majority of the estate. Hmm.

I’m fairly certain that this person will live with his parents until they die, and probably for at least a few weeks afterward.

It’s the downside of the popular fast back “coupe” look

I’m 6’1” I can’t sit in the back of a Ford Fusion. But I had no problem in any of my old Civics, my 91 Galant  or my 97 Accord, a car that is at least similar is size to a Fusion. Becythwy were all 3 box sedans.

At least a Fusion is a low slung sedan, For a tallboi crossover to have poor headroom is just stupid.

They want the IDEA of more passengers just like everyone on HGTV “loves to entertain.”

Old habits die hard.

Grand kids

That’s a good point. My mom has a Hyundai’s Sonata, but plans on buying a 3 row SUV For hauling grand kids when she moves to NC where 3/4 most of her grand kids  live. She wants to be able to haul them all around, and two of them are almost teens.

I have two elderly (60-70) co-worker who are still financially supporting their kids when they should be retired.

Heck my parents would have ended up there, they finally cut my sister off 2  years ago. She’s 32

I appear to be one of only a handful of persons I know whose parents did not help them buy a house... And when I say “help” in this context I don’t mean a few grand, but like... ALL the grands. Some of these people make far more than me, too . Go figure.

Once I had kids for a few years, I realized that if I had adopted the same financial strategies 10 years before kids, I’d be retired by now.

I can never decide whether I should have my rear seat or not. More space back there without it but it’s handy to keep stuff closer at hand, and way too awkward to remove or install during cold weather so I have to make a decision in the fall for the next several months.

But other than transporting a couple of young cousins once or twice a year it’s never for people.

It happens, sometimes you need a safety net to get you on your feet. It just shouldn’t be your whole plan to go through life as shiftless as an Oldsmobile .

I guess we did have help in a way there, we bought the house from my FIL so he sold it to use for what paid for it in 2002, 80k if he had put it on the market he probably could have gotten 100,000. He did live  in it for a few years, and then rent it out, and make money off of it for another 13, so it’s not like he lost money on the deal.

That’s just a nice hookup — quite common (lady who cuts my hair did the same thing) . The difference is he did not literally buy a house for you (or under his name).

I mean you don’t really need anything bigger than a Versa because that car can fit 4 people over 6ft with room to spare but every year cars get bigger and SUV’s more popular.

I say this of modern cars in general.

My 1995 small midsize sedan can carry a family of 5 comfortably, 6 adults in a pinch.

A modern fullsize sedan struggles to carry 4 adults comfortably.

I think a big part of that is also the thinkness of the doors, and pillars. Also the big center consoles.

I think the bigger factor is the over-rounded body designs taking up shoulder space, but giant consoles and pillars don’t help things either.
