Everyone keeps saying that the C8 Corvette is going to be a $140,000+ car. There will be versions that'll probably cost around there, but I really wouldn't expect to see that drastic of a price jump over the C7's now. Some people just don't know how the auto industry works I guess.

I agree, starting price shouldn’t be that insane of a jump... this is the corvette we’re talking about, NOT the Z4...

That remains the point to be made, are we comparing the base C8 to a barebo nes 1LT non-Z51 C7 or should the C8 really be compared against a Grand Sport/Z06/ZR1?

$ 140,000 is already around ZR1 territory as crazy as that is to type out. But hey, the C6 ZR1 had a MSRP of $ 100,000 in 2009 .

Bet they’re doing a C addy and a C hevy and the Caddy comes out as a halo car to be sold alongside the C7 for awhile until the more basic versions replace the C7s.

There’s currently $66k in price difference between the base price of the top & bottom level ‘Vettes.

I will wager you one large bushy mustache ride and an unbuttonable button up Hawaiian shirt that the range is slightly larger on the new one. Starting price will be in the $60k range, the ZR1 level in the $130k+ range.

It’s GM, so after sales don’t meet expectations  for the first 6 months they’ll put $10k in rebates on them.

I’m still of the opinion that Corvette becomes a brand and the C8 is one of two models available alongside the C7 until a new front engine C9 comes out...unless they don’t consider the mid engine car a conventional Corvette and the next front engine  one is the C8.

The most convincing scrap of news that I’ve seen so far regarding what’s going to happen with the next-gen Co rvette is a pair of platform codes suggesting that there will be two distinct models. One to carry on the classic Corvette that we all know and love, and a new mid-engined Corvette .

What makes this rumor convincing to me is how th e platform names are consistent with established platform naming conventions. That, and t he notion that Chevy’s not afraid to give the name “Corvette” to two totally different cars is consistent with their past history of having their head up their ass . They did that with the Lumina , so who’s to say they won’t make the Corvette confusing too?

There will only be the Y2 platform , the xx are the variations.

Y1xx is the current C7 range.

It was going to be a Cadillac but GM decided that they are going to kill off the Cadillac brand and spin off the SUV’s as a new brand  under the Escalade marque.  The only car worth saving was this so they just decided to make it the Corvette.

Yup, the xx is just a placeholder, like it is with, say, the K2xx trucks. It’s interesting that they would feel the need to leave space like that on Corvettes... Because among the K2xx series, the first x seems to be related to body style variants, while the second x is a brand identifier. So applying that directly to Corvettes, the first x could allow for 4-door and wagon models (doubtful but interesting). And the second x could be, as we’ve already been suspecting, a Cadillac ( XLR?) ...

But I can’t bring myself to believe that both the front-engined and rear/mid engined models would fall under the same basic platform, though. It’s one thing to stretch a truck frame to accommodate more doors, but there’s no way front- and rear- engined ’Vettes should be sharing the same architecture. It should be a completely different car underneath.

There aren’t going to be 2 different corvettes, just the rear-mid engine.

The 2 car 2 different platform thing is just a horrible forum rumor that I wish would die off already. It makes no sense from a production perspective nor a business strategy . For those who like the engine in front of them there’s the Camaro, which already comes very close and in some cases bests the Corvette in performance .

I fully expect it to be a $100k plus car, that just seems to be what they are going for, and giving ever increasing income inequality, that might be a smart move on their part. I don’t think they’ll leave a $50k-100k gap between the Camaro and the Corvette though. The easiest thought is that they’ll keep making the C7 for a few years, though I don’t know how logistically feasible that is (Bowling Green is said to have a bunch of excess capacity, but if that excess capacity just means they could run two more shifts, it doesn’t really help them since they could still only sell one car). Regardless, I think people expecting the mid-engined Corvette to be as cheap as the current model are in for a surprise (not as much of a surprise as the people who think the new Supra is going to be cheap though).

The C4 was in production for 12 years. The C5 for 7, C6 for 8, and the C7 for only four so far. I don’t think it’s super far fetched, and I can see GM hedging their bets because so many of their buyers are traditional Corvette owners. I just don’t see Corvette going mid-engine-only.
