I’m currently on the Galaxy S7 Edge - I’ve definitely heard a wide variety of experiences in regards to this phone and the Android system in general. Personally, I love the phone since I haven’t experienced any noticeable slowdowns or lag with this phone which is quite the contrast to my two previous Android phones.

Right now, I’m weighing my options but was toying with the idea of moving to Apple and getting the iOS. I personally don’t get the furious circlejerking people have for their beloved corporations, but I don’t really have any specific brand loyalty.

I’m definitely tied into the Google services since I absolutely love Inbox (which is dying soon anyway, wtf), Drive, and Photos. However, I know all of these apps and their Apple alternatives are available on iOS as well. I don’t think it’s possible to transfer my Whatsapp data to iOS without paying for a third party app, so that’s a pain in the ass, and I don’t like the fact that storage is not expandable since I use a 128GB SD card in my S7 Edge for media storage. I’m not too worried about having to repurchase apps since I only have a couple of games and a podcast app.

For those that have crossed the divide into the other OS, what made the switch worthwhile? What features do you miss?

For those that are already using Apple, is iTunes still needed on your PC ? Will I be able to easily transfer my media onto an iPhone through Windows Explorer and have smooth playback like I do with VLC on my Android phone?

The only Apple phone I’m interested in is the XR since the XS prices start to get crazy. and at that price point I’m more inclined to go towards the Note 9. My choice is likely to be between the XR and the Galaxy S9+

I had a Nexus 5x, which I actually liked a lot, but then it and it’s two replacements wouldn’t stop bootlooping and Google and lg weren’t doing anything so I got tired of it and bought and an iPhone 7 when it came out.

It was a nice phone, but I could never get on board with iOS. Still used a lot of Google based apps on it, but after 6 months I sold it and went back to Android

With an LG, which was a mistake

Now I have a note9 lol

Tl:Dr I'm no help at all, but switching isn't necessarily impossible

I’ve switched both ways(iPhone 5 to Nexus 5X which died in smok y fashion when the charging port shorted out somehow , to a used iPhone 6) , currently have an XR. Also part of my job is Android development so I still spend a lot of time with Android.

Both are good, but IMO if you’re spending flagship money Apple products just work and perform better in the real world AS A PHONE(not as a toy. I don’t care about widgets or custom launchers . ). As far as making calls, sending texts, taking photos, seamlessly connected to wifi networks and bluetooth devices Android devices require constant fiddling and iOS devices just do what you expect. I can’t think of any features I miss from Android now that iOS devices are fast charge capable.

Also don’t listen to the specs people. Even when it was true that Android devices usually had superior hardware specs, iOS does a much better job of resource allocation to the point that iOS devices will feel snappier and perform better than Android devices with far superior specs, as the advantage of the closed ecosystem is that software can be better optimized to the hardware. And now iOS device specs meet (or in the case of processing power) exceed anything else so you have both.

I use M ac and L inux at home so I can’t speak to how well it talks with Windows, although if you think you could ever end up with a Mac the integration is fantastic.

I haven’t switched - I just considered going Apple to Other and just stuck with what I’m familiar with, mostly because I’m comfortable with how all my apple devices cooperate. I don’t have iTunes at the moment and last used it because my old 5S needed to be force-upgraded.

I got an XR and I like it but I’ve barely du g into the features. I really want to play around with the camera more.

My smartphone time line:

Symbian>iOS>Windows Phone>Windows Phone>iOS>Android>Android>iOS

What made you want to switch?

I just switched from a OnePlus 5 to an iPhone 8 Plus. My OnePlus is one of the best phones I’ve ever owned.

Also the new Nokia phones are excellent choices.

Both use basically stock Android and have high build quality.

I had an S7E and thought it was a laggy POS compared to the other clean Android phones I’ve had. Replaced it with an Essential after only a year because I was fed up with it.

I also had an iPhone issued to me by my previous job because they had a super restrictive BYOD policy and I didn’t want to give them that much access to my personal phone. As a longtime Android user, I can adapt to most of iOS but a few things about it bugged me.

Notifications are way worse in iOS. With iOS 12, Apple just finally added stacking where you can get your notifications grouped together by app, and it’s not nearly as manageable as Android. Swiping on notifications to expand them enough to get the info you need, without switching into the application, isn’t there. You can’t shoot off quick replies to messages from notifications. They’re just not something you interact with like in Android, you instead have to open the app. Which is...fine, I guess. But I much prefer Android notifications.

I love my home screen calendar and weather widgets. iOS mostly replicates this on a separate home screen. Android, I use Nova Launcher so my app drawer is (mostly) folders and I’ve gotten away from having a ton of apps on my home screen. Just the most frequent stuff, the google bar, and my calendar and weather widgets. I like seeing all that stuff together. iOS on the other hand you basically live on the app drawer as your home screen and widgets are in one other area, notifications another, quick settings another.

Text selection and copying and pasting are a little weird in iOS compared to Android.

If you live by mostly Google services, everything is more tightly integrate in Android.

S9+ is all well and good but there are plenty of phones that will be an upgrade over an S7E, and while the S9 series doesn’t suffer the stutter/ lag issues my S7E did (and yours apparently didn’t, or you haven’t used a clean Android phone where the S7E would bug you in comparison) I personally would steer you toward any number of other phones.

And lookie what I happen to have posted here ! (Short answer: if you were willing to spend $750 on an iPhone XR or Galaxy S9+, just buy a OnePlus 6 or 6T instead. Or even an LG G7 or V35. Don’t spend 750 friggin dollars if you don’t have to. )

Functionally, I don’t have any problems with Android, but it’s the infrequent updates and short support life. My iPad had support for 5 years and received four major updates to the OS (started with 6, ended with 10).

I think the only concern that has steadily been growing for me is security. I hate the fact that I never have an up-to-date Android since by the time I get the new OS (if ever) it’s already out of date. I know security updates and OS overhauls are different, but the scarcity of either is kind of shitty . Most seem to say that iOS is better for privacy reasons as well in regards to the data Google collects vs. Apple collects (although I’m not sure if using iOS will make any difference because of the fact that I use so many of their apps).

I also really like the XR case colours, I think I’d get the blue one.

Hhonestly the OnePlus 6t makes a strong arguement for itself especially at the price point.

I have switched from Android to iOS and back. My time line looks something like this but forgive me I dont remember the model names:

HTC>HTC>HTC>Iphone ( 6?)>HTC>HTC

Next won’t be a HTC but another Android.

I transferred all the whatsapp stuff from Android to iOS and back without paying anything .

Why did I switch do iOS?

Well i just wanted to try it and not just listen to others why it’s worse/better.

Why did i switch back?

Many things I didn’t like, especially the nannying which stopped me making my own choises (I can give you more detail if you want?). And also the poor quality of cables, equipment and theire high prices.

There were also some pluses but just not enough.

Hope this helps and just ask for more info

Yeah, Android does tend to be more finicky, although my experience overall with the S7 Edge has been a lot better than my previous two phones.

I think I’ve just become so used to the foibles that I’ve become blind to them. It’s funny that you mention the fast-charge, which, along with wireless charging, are two conveniences I have with my phone and are now in Apple phones.

Kinja'd!!!0

It’s not that any of the foibles are deal breakers, just at the premium price point where Apple and Samsung play it makes Apple devices feel like much more polished products .

Wireless is a minor enough convince to me I’m not really bothered one way or another about it.

Fast-charging was the one thing that realllly felt like a step back going back to an iPhone from my Nexus. I was in college then and the exhausting combo of a good student and big partier (I mean, this is a first world problem and a half) but all of a sudden I couldn’t get home with an almost dead phone after a day of classes, clubs and studying at 8 and have it mostly charged by the time I’m going out at 8:30

I didn’t know about the notifications thing, the homescreen differences I’m familiar with; I find text selection kind of strange in Android already, but I’m not as familiar with how it works on iOS.

I’ll likely be going through a heavily discounted plan through work - I did check out your post (thanks for sharing) but it’s geared towards Americans. I’d be able to get the XR at basically half price (51 0 Canadian marks). S9+ is a good chunk more at 640 dollars, and the G7 ThinQ is 500, G7 One is 32 5. I have been looking at the Oneplus 6T but since I’d have to buy it outright it would actually be the most expensive option.

Oh that’s easy, get the G7 One. You get the nice hardware of the G7, no there’s not as fancy of a camera but you have no BS LG skin, pure Android. No it’s not this year’s top chip but SD835 is plenty powerful, and you can run the GCam Port to get the Pixel camera app for better quality. It’s great on my Essential.

The other big things I forgot about with iOS, especially for work:

I’m all about Gboard, and while you can install third-party keyboards on iOS including Gboard, if you use Gboard, the voice dictation can be kinda wonky where sometimes it does it in the keyboard itself, sometimes if an app has certain privacy settings it flips to a separate dictation window then back to the app, like that happened with my company’s shite Outlook app and voice dictation from Gboard.

On Android, I paid for Nine, which is a much better Outlook compatible email client than the craptastic Outlook app. I hated Outlook for iOS even a little bit more than Android because it has all the limits of Outlook Mobile plus you’re in Apple’s sandbox of app design. Nine for iOS is an invite-only beta but maybe there’s other good iOS mail clients?

The Oneplus 6T does have a good purchase price but it actually ends up being my most expensive option since it’s not available through my carrier plus the discount I get through work makes the XR a couple hundred dollars cheaper than buying a 6T outright (and the S9+ would be around $100 cheaper).

I had a Motorola Droid Turbo and switched to an iPhone 6S last year . So glad I did, I don’t think I’m going back to android. Everything is so much better. It has very occasional glitches and goofs, but so much smoother and reliable than my android. Photo quality is light years better, despite being a similar megapixel camera, and app functionality is much better on iOS. Overall, I’m very pleased with apple despite being a nay-sayer to them just a few years ago.

Before the S7 Edge I had the Nexus 5 and stock Android - heck, when I copied everything over to my S7E I guess I copied over the launcher that I had on that phone as well since my phone doesn’t use the Samsung skin.

My phone is only a personal and entertainment device, so Outlook functionality is not a concern, and I don’t think I’ve ever used the Office apps included with my S7E.

Think about it like this; With Google you are the product, with Apple you buy the product (and increased privacy).

I switched for the same reasoning. While I like how Android operates, I dislike that it is essentially just there to run a Spyware layer for Google to collect your info.

I realize that Apple still collects info, but I appreciate that it takes great pains to protect it.

Reliable wi-fi calling made me switch from android to iOS. I was rabbit android supporter. I tried an iPhone 3 or something years ago and hated it. Used a galaxy phone, hated the lack of OS updates, switched to Nexus, then Pixel. Last Nexus I had didn’t even support WiFi calling. The pixel I replaced it with sucked - it showed on but it wouldn’t work without a reset. My house has bad coverage, so I switched to an iPhone 6s Plus, then 7 plus, then X.

I’m probably never going back again. I rarely have to restart. I get the latest OS and features the day they are released. The few thing I missed about Android - well, I forgot about them and can’t even remember what I missed. I use google chrome, gmail, google calendar, google drive - they work well, they might lack a feature or two that they get on Android, but not many. You can pretty much never use iTunes unless all your music is stored on your desktop.

Price is steep - but Android is not much cheaper. Resale value is amazing. Amount of accessories is staggering. I’m sold at this point. Plus, all my family is on iOS and it’s hard to be only android guy and not use iMessage.

Yeah the used prices for 2 year old S7 Edges seem to be at least $100 less than the similar age iPhone 7+ around here.

Asking, that’s really all I have to compare by, and that’s the feeling I get as well. Asking prices for 7+ is generally higher whereas I see S7 Edges in excellent condition asking about $100 less but many that are posted at even lower prices, but a lot of those seem to be in worse condition.
