Just a rough photoshop of what I’m sorely tempted to do. Thoughts?

I’m not sure if I like the stripe above the front wheel withe the two right angles. Too angular for a swoopy Mister Two. Start the lower stripe behind the front wheel and continue it to the air intake vent and I’m sold.

You’re trying to convince yourself, so yes.
Just do it out of something not permanent.

You described my original mockup perfectly :D
I added the 90-degree ones but got kinda carried away with the fender. Will post further iterations on Oppo for feedback before I commit to a livery.

It’s like a multiple choice test... your first guess is usually right. Don’t over-think it! ;)

Oh I’ve already convinced myself, just posting here to share the radness.
I want to find a paint or dip that I can apply and just wash off after a given weekend. Like, different livery for each autocross I attend.

Mmm I think I’ll add a center over-the-top stripe but delete the 90° angles & fender stripe. Will ‘shop a mockup soon.

do you want honesty, or do you want politeness?
No way in hell.
If you want the three-color stripes, I would do a little chevron or stripe band somewhere subtle, and leave it at that.
if it were just the three color bars between the side intake and the rear wheel arch, that would be subtle.
Leave the rest off. It is a street car, not a liveried race car, and if it were a liveried car, it would have to go pretty much to a two tone paint job, with stripes as the gradient between them, with one of the colors being white.
In reality, your blue MR2 is probably better suited to Gulf livery...
But be careful... Gulf is also easy to try, and look awkward at...
Arguably, subtle and cool goes a long way, not only less is more, but careful design.

Thank you for the extensive & honest feedback. Point taken, that would be four colors if it’s red/orange/yellow AND blue too.
Further research is gonna happen before I commit to any specific one, unless I can find a way to do removable stripes.
I like the Gulf idea too, that does look pretty nice...

Let me just say...
Vinyl Wrap is your friend on things that you may change your mind about, or that the next owner might not want, rather than committing to paint or permanent changes.
With the vintage Toyota stripes, it appears to go one of two ways, either with the stripes separated by a thin white gap between the colors, or the colors directly in contact with a white or black border at the beginning and end... and they tend to be increasing width, yellow thinnest, orange slightly wider, and red widest.
Generally, it appears that the colors get darker from the light toward the front of the car, dark toward the back, unless the two tone (black and white AE86, for instance) supersede that, where it goes light to dark with the body color change.
Horizontal stripes on the A40 Celica show the yellow at the bottom, directly in contact with the wider orange, and widest red at the top, with thin black outlines, and the stripes following the contours, not interrupted by them.
I kind of like the colors used on the late model Camry PPG show car, with the metallic gold and copper, and nice bloody red.
A little 4-color vinyl stripe panel, between white, yellow, orange and red, (white as a thin lead in before the yellow, and thin gap between the colors, and the increasing stripe width) applied to a strategic place on the car, could be quite subtle and cool.
Little wheel center logos with the three-color diagonal stripes could be OK, too, if they look OEM, not over-emphasized.
but stripes up and down the side of the car, every which direction would not end up looking cohesive and slick.

I like these when I feel they fit the car especially well. The part around the vent is dope but the kink up at the front is not so good.
Maybe instead of that part, run it all the way to the front wheel and a little on the bumper? Then it runs all the way along that recess in the door forward of the vent. Looks to fit the body better

I would remove the stripes over the front fender, and push all three stripes closer together so there is no blue coming through. Making the stripe fill the entire gap from the rocker to the door trim could work too.

the line where the stripes come down from the top of the fender should be paralleled with the kick up over the rear wheel.

I really like the stripes (and almost want to do some graphics on my 4runner) but I think it clashes with the blue

I could argue that you could do more, but I’m probably biased. It looks ok to me.

The 90 bends look wrong. Maybe start straight from the back of the front wheel well?

i dont think the colors or the shape works. you should absolutely do some graphics tho, just do something that goes with the lines and colors.

I’m thinking maybe yellow & black stripes to match the license plate & wheels. More subtle than the red/orange/yellow.
