This was, not surprisingly, a big issue in Houston, despite all manner of no left turn signs (ignored by many, many drivers, even when the signs only turned on where there was a train ) They actually had to change the light cycle at many intersections so that it is red from all directions when a train comes through, because people parallel to the trains were too dumb for “left turn yield on green”. And of course Houstonians mostly seem to blame the light rail, which has right of way and can’t stop quickly instead of the drivers breaking the law.

The one with the kid really made me feel bad

The same happens here but with BRTs... drivers don’t seem to understand how right of way works. Also... a cyclist once crashed into a BRT... HEAD FUCKING ON because he was riding, counterflow, in the BRT’s lane.

Am I a monster for thinking the kid got a much deserved lesson? At least he'll keep his distance around trains in the future.

That’s fine as long as he wasn’t seriously hurt and/or killed (didn’t look to be the case). If he lost any limbs, that’s probably an excessively harsh lesson for a kid.

I can’t really tell how quick the train was going, but it was most definitively above a safe speed for the kid to be crashed into.

Here’s a classic from a decade ago:
The incompetence of drivers never ceases to amaze me.

It’s actually very difficult to be run over by a tram, because the wheels are usually well skirted to prevent such a thing. Unless you’re laying down across the tracks, you tend to just get knocked out of the way. Not that that won’t cause other injuries, but having a hand or foot cut off is rare.
On a tangent, some cities are fighting for the wheels on tractor trailers to be skirted to avoid the all too common pedestrian deaths that occur when trailers ride over curbs and onto sidewalks when making turns - but trucking companies have been fighting them, because killing people is apparently great business?

I mean, the phrase is “making a killing”.

And maybe look both ways before crossing.

I saw a woman nearly get smacked by the train a couple of weeks ago. Stupid thing was that she had just departed a train and was about to cross the rails on the other side of the road. I nearly yelled when I saw what was about to happen, but she realized her mistake and pulled up short just in time.
Whew.

I understand truck companies in some places don’t like run under bars too.

Not to absolve the kid, because clearly he fucked up, but I think if I were driving alongside kids facing the other way, not paying attention to me, I’d toot my horn.

I bet some horn tootin' was going on...
