With any kind of high-strength glue? JB weld? Or is that asking too much? it’s a garage door spring for a manual garage door.

You could try bending the top coil up to take place of the hook . I did that with the last garage door I fixed and it’s still working

It would be faster, not to mention safer, just to replace.

Yeah. I figured as much. I let my optomistic outlook get swayed by a "stronger than welding" advertisement. Ah well

Of course you can fix that. Get a new spring.

Oh, you mean you want to mend the spring itself? I see. Do you have access to a foundry that can do spring metal work?

I thought about that. I don't think my heat gun will get it hot enough to do that though

Absolutely do not try to epoxy it back together. You could try bending the end to match what was originally there though.

There are few things my dad is afraid of. He does every single maintenance item on his house by himself. Plumbing, drywall, electrical, you name it . Every single thing except the spring on his garage door. One of his friends got killed when one broke as he tried to pull it out. I don’t intend to ever replace one myself.

Hmm. The way it's set up on this particular door, there's zero tension on the spring when the door is open

Just pull out the spring and eat your wheaties every morning. Install a handle and physically open the door every day.

As a Physics teacher and a homeowner I would totally call someone to replace it.  I refuse to work on those and car suspensions.

You’d need a torch, and heating it up that hot would make that portion no longer a spring. And if you don’t have safety cables on those springs, make sure you put some on.

I never knew garage door springs were so dangerous. Now I’m gonna be paranoid whenever I’m near one.

Yeah, there's a reason why these doors were phased out. I grew up in a house with this, and one of the springs snapped, leaving a hole in the garage ceiling.

In the category of “ Here Hold my Beer” ideas ; How about threading a chain onto the spring and then tightening a hose clamp onto the spring so it cannot slide off? Then hook the chain to whatever the loop was hooked to....

ditto - those things scare me.  We had one bust a few years ago (likely original to the house from 1968) - sounded like gunfire.  I happily paid the garage door guy a couple hundred bucks to change it out.

I will say that these can be removed and replaced with zero tension in the spring, so that doesn’t worry me much.

But yes I'm going with the smart option and buying new springs

You can so fix this. Don’t let people scare you. But you need new springs.

I was scared until I watched a bunch of YT videos on how to safely wind and unwind springs. You don’t need to worry about the unwinding part as its already done. The main thing is that you MUST get the proper tools. This is what I bought and I successfully unwound my spring and replaced my garage door and then wound it back up. I found the hardest part was keeping track of my winding count. People who kill themselves use crap like screwdrivers to try to wind/unwind.

Search Amazon for: The Hillman Group 852143 18" Winding Rod - For Torsion Springs 2-Pack

It just occurred to me that you don’t have torsion springs. Never mind the product recommendation then.  To those that do have torsion springs, the advise still goes.  As for JB Weld, it is crap.  It might work well for plugging holes, but it is brittle and doesn’t work well in tension or shear applications in my experience.

Most housing codes require a length of safety cable to be run through the axis of the spring and affixed on each end.  That’s meant to control the spring from flailing around if it should break.
