Tesla released this video 3 days ago of the first rides in the new Roadster
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :
7,376 pound-feet of torque
0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, making it the quickest production car in the world.
0-100 mph in 4.2 seconds.
Quarter mile in 8.8 seconds, which beats every other production car.
250+ mph top speed.
620 miles of highway range.
But here’s the kicker:

Yeah, but tax rebate baby!
![]() 12/10/2018 at 15:22 |

You’re right. BRB making reservation right now.
![]() 12/10/2018 at 15:22 |

Nah, the kicker as always, is when they’ll be in driveways

Definitely sometime in the future, for sure with certainty.

Supercar costs for supercar performance, seems reasonable.

HOW MUCH TORQUE!??!?!?
![]() 12/10/2018 at 15:31 |

ALL OF IT.

B..but panel gaps! Slipping delivery schedule! Over-promise and Under-deliver! Shortsellers and SEC fines! Tweets and Tents!!

I thought that was all part of that Tesla experience?

This thing will kill some idiots . Who wants silence, no thanks. The only electric car I might want someday is a DD to get to work in the city cheap. I think the surprise that electric cars have torque is over, we know!

This thing will kill some idiots
Just like every other high power supercar, no difference. I diots will find a way.

I was surprised by that figure as well so I did some research. They’re quoting wheel torque, which is the motor torque multiplied by the g earing and final drive. Actual motor torque has been estimated to be around 750 lbs-ft, which is still impressive.
Tesla is just being extremely misleading...again.

just waiting for the tech to trickle down to a 5 second 300 mile range Ford aspire looking hatchback that costs 15k new.

But you get 1, just 1, for free if you currently own a new Tesla. Oh, a nd you referred 50 of your closest friends and they bought a new Tesla.

To be released shortly after the $35k model 3

Tesla, Misleading?
![]() 12/10/2018 at 15:55 |

Only a quarter mil (not counting the dopey tax break) for decent range now, we’re finally gett ing some where.

The inevitable e lectric future’s final deathblow to “Big ICE”

“ 7,376 pound-feet of torque” bullshit. It fucking doesn’t. That’s wheel torque, which is a figure NEVER used in the auto industry. It is multiplied by the gear ratio, the actual figure is a still impressive but far less horseshit 760-ish lb-ft of torque.

I thought it sounded like a pretty good deal for 250+mph, sub 2 second 0-60 and 600 miles of range. Those stats are pretty insane, even for supercars, and sold at Lamborghini H
uracan prices.

Love it. Can’t wait until we get independent testing.
![]() 12/10/2018 at 16:53 |

To be honest, wheel torque in first gear is a far more useful measurement than crank torque, which tells you very little without the gear ratios.

By the time it’s shipping, there won’t be a federal tax break IIRC.

Even better

“ making it the quickest production car in the world.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Yeah...
“p
roduction car”
....
that’s a
good one. I’m sure a
ll
of the specs are totally
”real.
”
I’d bet $1000 that that “production car” on stage in the
videos
is simply a P100D drivetrain on a lighter weight
chassis. No way that’s the production car yet.
![]() 12/10/2018 at 18:37 |

*Not a production car yet.
These are the fairly loose guidelines most follow to determine if a car should be considered a production car :
being constructed principally for retail sale to consumers for their personal use, and to transport people on public roads (no commercial or industrial vehicles are eligible);
fitted with the original manufacturer-supplied road tires;
having had 25 or more instances made by the original vehicle manufacturer and offered for commercial sale to the public in new condition (cars modified by either professional tuners or individuals are not eligible); and
being street-legal in their intended markets and capable of passing any official tests or inspections required to be granted this status.
That makes the Tesla Roadster an amazingly capable concept car, but a concept car nonetheless.

Kicker? Quarter mil for the fastest car in the world? How many times the price is the second fastest car in the world? Wiki says it’s the 918 Spyder, how many Road sters could you buy for the price of one of those?
Yes, the Demon and Atom are up there, I’d argue they aren’t fair comparisons.

Gimmie a Yaris instead

Yes, electric cars are powerful.
But for how long? 8 seconds at a time, a few times, before the car goes into thermal protective limp mode.
Porsche, Aston, etc... are still trying to get an electric car to complete a whole lap of the N urburgring at speed.
Hybrid is still the name of the game in actual performance for more than a couple minutes at a time.

You know what’s in that box, right? Slinkys
![]() 12/13/2018 at 13:29 |

Right? Whenever they brag about like a thousand wheel torque, I translate that to ‘very average acceleration.’
That said, it’s not like they’re pulling numbers out of the ether. MPGe though...
