For the health of my colon I’ve been told by the staff at the hospital where I recently spent a few days to avoid red meat, but I’ve also been told by the same sta ff that I’m anemic and should eat some red meat to get my iron level up. :/
Yeah, I’ll just take a supplement...

The Oppo solution would be to chew rust.

avoid and take a supplement

Avoid if on advice of dr in regards to a specific G.I. Problem and supplement.
But...if the advice to avoid red meat is coming from Reader’s Digest...or a vegetarian...or a chiropractor...then disregard, but still add a supplement. You probably can’t eat enough meat to really correct an iron deficiency.

Both pieces of advice were coming from the medical staff at the hospital. My apologies - I should have made that clear, but it’s very early in th e morning and I'm still in a strange state...

I just saw your earlier post. Sorry for making light of your troubles.

Red meat ain’t the greatest for us. But plenty of iron to be had in chicken, turkey, clams and mussels. Spinach, beans and quinoa are good sources of iron that is harder for us to absorb.

I would go with specifically hat your doctor says and ignore others if you’re getting conflicting info...?

by “ staff at the hospital” do you mean a gastroenterologist? or nursing staff. or surgical staff.

Don’t worry about it one bit . I’m just trying to make fun of a challenging situation.

I haven’t actually seen a GI yet. This was advice given by a selection of different doctors and nurses in the ER. Once I see a GI I will take their advice since this is their specialty.

Direticulitus?

I have had bouts of diverticulitis in the past and try to maintain a high-fiber, low red meat diet, which sometimes is easier said than done. But perhaps I’ve been too successful in that regard as my iron level is now too low. I’ll do the supplements for now and look for other ways to get iron through better food choices.

My wife has been dealing with direticulosis (a hole) since August. They told her low fiber and only a little red meat. Surgery is Thursday to correct.

Ah, I'd never heard of that before; I thought it was a typo TBH. Doctors found a mass on my colon that I need to have investigated soon, but after 16+ years of this nothing surprises me anymore. Best of luck to your wife on that surgery.

Yeah, that’s medical personnel treating one thing while ignoring the other thing...
You’re spot on regarding the supplement. There are other ways to get iron besides red meat, and the GI doc should be able to give you more coherent advice - best of luck!

Sorry to hear about your ongoing issues. This was something I never heard about before August. Now I know how bad it can be. No fun at all.

Shellfish contain even more iron than red meat. Not sure ho w clams would affect your gut, though.

I love clams, and have some Manhattan Clam Chowder sitting there that’s been calling my name. Shellfish and lots of veg? Sounds like it should be a winner.

Well good news, red wine is high in iron.

Good to know, so I guess now I’ll be happy and healthy. I’ll just need to get a doctor’s note so I can drink at work.

Yeah, just careful with your fiber intake with the veggies. Spinach and broccoli have lots of iron as well, but any plant source of fiber will also have lots of fiber (cellulose).

Just follow the science and there’s no evidence that meat of any color is unhealthy

Like anything, it’s all about moderation. And given my slightly above average dimensions (I am American, after all...) , sometimes I have difficulty with that. Whilst concentrating on fiber intake I may have not paid too much attention to iron, hence part of this current situation. With a busy, stressful life I may not eat as well as I should and I'm finally starting to understand multivitamins; in the past I believed that food should be able to provide all nutrition, but maybe I'm wrong.

Actually nothing is about moderation except being in charge of debates . Your food can provide adequate vitamins if you eat foods of a quality and type that humans evolved to eat. To be optimized though supplementation is needed. Single pill multivitamins are a joke.
