Kinja'd!!!

This 180k mile Buick LeSabre Custom is for sale locally for $850. Bad trans. My friend just got a free 4MT Iron Duke Pontiac Fiero which he is going to use for a couple youtube videos and then scrap. Said 4MT will bolt right into a LeSabre, and after some minor clutch pedal and shifter mount fabricobbling would be the world’s probably-only manual trans 8th gen LeSabre. I want to do nothing more.

How would this work electronically? That buick will not be happy without the trans wiring hooked up, and with the manual it’s not going to hook up.

Oh man, manual 3800.   How could you stop yourself?  Though not sure if the 4MT in the Fiero can handle the 3800's torque - but it would probably hold up for a while.

It's worth what, $875 with a working transmission?

Good luck with the fabrication part if you go for it, adding a clutch pedal to a vehicle(especially one that was never offered with one) is apparently much harder than you’d imagine.

Stop buying more shitty cars if you struggle to maintain the ones you have. Given your record over the last year, you should have figured this out by now and stuck to the minimum number of vehicles you and yours need to get around.

That would be like 4,000 rpm at 60, check the final drive ratios.

I don’t doubt that it could, but I’ve rarely heard of such things ever going so smoothly as they are made out to be. Plus, user name doesn’t bode well.

Sorry man, not even remotely that simple. The 8th gen doesn’t have an independent TCM or a MEMCAL that speaks manual. You’d have to replace all the electronics to even have a hope of getting it to start.

I had thoughts about that. Manual V6 camaro PCM was one though. Another was a guy in California that has hacked up these ECUs to let them work with 4T80es.

Nope. Totally different engine. Just because it says 3.8L on the tin doesn’t mean it’s a 3800. Camaro’s an L36 which wasn’t used in any other US application.

No point using a 4T80 either unless you’ve got one of my engines. Even then, I used hybrid 4T60E/ 4T65E ’s.

The L36 is the code for the naturally aspirated Series II engines... the same thing those LeSabres (and others) come with factory. We have a 4T80 in one of our compound boost setups but I’m more interested in L67+manual trans setups like in a Brunton Super St alker except transverse. Really though it’d need an F40 trans. The torque of even an L36 would probably split a Fiero 4MT in half, much less an L67 (which would be the true goals) .

My point when I mentioned the 4T80 is that there is a guy who knows how to change the relevant tables and bits in the PCM to make other trans like the 4t80 work, or to make manuals work. I believe he has done it for F40 -> Grand Prix GTP swaps.

Buick lowered with tethers, janky 350 swapped Jag, cobbled together turbo Miata, etc. Your penchant for these sorts of ventures is well known so it’s not a stretch to think you’d be serious about this one.

Don’t get me wrong, I think all these things are hilarious fun but they cost you more than they should -  funds you shouldn’t treat as disposable. From what I’ve read, you stretch yourself financially to have fun with cars and bikes - buying things that are nicer/more fun/expensive/less practical/etc (Lexus, Miata) than you can really afford instead of cheaper, more basic, dependable transportation - that is unwise.

Listen, you’ve had some crap luck of late and I hate sound like I’m piling the hate on top of that but I’m just trying to offer a bit of sound advice from an older, though not necessarily wiser, head.

Good night.
