The more active guilty cats try to shmooze their way into your good graces when feigning innocence. The lazy ones merely pretend to have have been otherwise engaged. Washing themselves Importantly. Sleeping Seriously.
It also dovetails with expected cat crimes, because general misdirected malevolence like blowing up the house without a clear motive is exactly the kind of thing a cat would do if they could think of it.

Whereas dogs who kill something will present it to you with enthusiasm expecting approval, as if they just brought home dinner.

It took me way to long to realize that was a bird cage not a lamp shade. Maybe because my cats had destroyed a few lamp shade so
