Very nice small station yet still very substantial .
How urban/rural is Ballarat?

Population of about 100,000
3rd largest city in Victoria after Melbourne and Geelong

Bloody hell. My city is only marginally larger in population .
Very different size train station. We are the only city in the county, the most sparcely populated county in England.
Just looked at the map, didn’t realise how small Victoria is compared to the rest of Oz. Though I’d hazard a guess the population is the same if not larger than that of Western Australia.
I like how the station has been kept as original as possible even with all the mandatory Health & Safety and compliance signs and equipment.

Train travel here was decimated under the Jeff Kennett government but is slowly making its way back
Dan Andrews is building a lot of rail infrastructure now

Ours was decimated back in 1965 in Dr Beeching’s report recomm ending closing 55% of stations and 30% of the overall train line mileage that were deemed unprofitable or underused.
There are sections now that have to be used. T o stop a station or route closing merely because it would create too much paperwork, cost too much to close and have to go so many rounds in government to close it, etc.. . Often called Ghost Trains they are actually called Parliamentary Trains and are merely complying with the Railway Regulation Act of 1844.
