But I can tell you that Galactica is the best designed starship EVER.

Pillar of Autumn or bust.

It’s a good design, though there are some others I would put ahead of it. The remake one is a bit nicer than the original I think.
![]() 12/06/2018 at 22:27 |

Incorrect. Serenity is the best starship in the universe
![]() 12/06/2018 at 22:31 |

It’s top 10 material, but nowhere near #1
![]() 12/06/2018 at 22:32 |

What would you put ahead of it so I may disagree? Remake is 120% better than the original.
![]() 12/06/2018 at 22:33 |

It’s fine for an aircraft carrier but it’s a bit claustrophobic. I like windows in my starships.

Pegasus.

I disagree. I like the original better. But then again, I am a historian, and I have a soft spot for the original since I watched the hell out of that show when it was on TV.

“jeez kid are you still not finished with that prop model ? They’ve moved up the shooting schedule and need it tomorrow morning!.... Nah forget putting anymore skin on it, just spray gray over the ribs you jigsaw cut and we’ll call it an exoskeleton or something......”

Middle schooler’s choice I see. (Ask me how I know)
Excelsior is better.

You see, most space ships have a landing problem that is inherent in the design. Even if ships could land, the weight balance is an issue. Hence, I give you the ship that will land perfectly.
The only minor design flaw is that it won’t fit in a round hole.

I have a soft spot for the Enterprise D, of course, so that would qualify. I’m pretty sure there were others, but I’m not feeling like doing a full ranking now, too many choices. I was looking at this for inspiration:
But frankly it’s extremely limited in what it covers. Still some ships on it might qualify (beside the enterprise), things like the Executor, the Defiant, Moya, and probably a few others that I’m missing on it. It would also help to know exactly what we consider a star ship, does the Normandy count? How about the Millennium Falcon? An X-Wing? What about space ships incapable of interstellar flight? Or even ones incapable of interplanetary flight?

The Excelsior was a workhorse that somehow managed to stay relevant throughout two centuries but stood against the Borg and Dominion it was no match. The Sovereign was a menace, a sexy ship that was meant to send shivers down the spine of any Federation enemy.
Far better than a Galaxy and far better than whatever that half-finished thing you originally posted is ;)

Gonna have to disagree with you there. The Cobra Mk III f ro m elite dangerous is designed on scientific principles and is an excellent design in the utilitarian sense.

I’m pretty sure that’s a 3018 Chevy 3500HD

Wrong.
![]() 12/06/2018 at 22:57 |

It’s still a good deign, but it just doesn’t look as good to me (my main complaint is that I’m bothered by the different arms connecting down to the subhulls)

I forgot what happened the pegasus, I think it flew into a base star.

That it did, and it went out in the most b!tch way possible. It doesn’t deserve a top 10 spot at all.
![]() 12/06/2018 at 23:02 |

Agreed, makes sense in ship design, like the fact they hide the CIC/Command room deep within the ship. Unlike other shows that have a big bridge open way on top for made for an easy attack.

MY POINT EXACTLY. Apollo fucked up.
![]() 12/06/2018 at 23:14 |

“But.. where are the lights?”
It’s a spaceship. In space.
“There aren’t enough windows!”
It’s. A. Spaceship. In. Space. And also a WARSHIP. Transparent, easily broken panels are NOT A GOOD IDEA.
“But how will they see where they’re going?”
OH. MY. GOD. Just... just... go away. Leave me to my work.
“Oh that’s neat! But you should put the bridge up at the nose!”
One, it’s the
bow
not the
nose
. It’s a ship. Not a plane. Two, IT’S A BLOODY WARSHIP. YOU PUT THE BRIDGE BEHIND AS MUCH ARMOR AS YOU CAN.
“Oh. I guess that makes sense. But it needs wings.”
... this ship masses several million tons IT DOES NOT BLOODY MANEUVER IN ATMOSPHERE, IT JUST FALLS!!
“Oh. Okay.”
“What is this flat nose crap? And it’s all boxy and ugly. We want it sexier
!”
IT’S A FUCKING SPACESHIP IN SPACE WHERE THERE IS NO ATMOSPHERE AND NO DRAG AND IT IS A WARSHIP THAT WANTS TO MOUNT ALL THE GUN AND ARMOR IT CAN!! DO YOU WANT A GODDAMN MEDIUM SCI-FI WARSHIP OR FUCKING STAR TREK, EMO EDITION?!
Sincerely, someone who also writes semi-hard sci-fi and is going to punch someone in the face if he has to explain one more time why a ship that mounts high caliber railguns needs to be measured in kilometers , can’t shoot significantly off-axis, and doesn’t have any fucking windows! (Okay, fine, I will admit it has nine.. in the bloody observation lounge.)
p.s. STOP ASKING ABOUT THE RIBS. There’s a damn story reason ! BSG-75 was halfway through being disarmed and converted to a museum when the Cylon attack happened. Go look at BSG Pegasus.

![]() 12/06/2018 at 23:18 |

THANK YOU. I thought I was gonna have to start smacking people or something. Actually, I still do, but less people.
“Hey, we should put the bridge right here at the very front of the ship and give it a giant glass window.”
WHAT, DO THEY NOT HAVE VIDEO CAMERAS AND RADAR TO GO WITH YOUR ANTI-MATTER REACTORS AND TELEPORTERS?

Actual things I have had to explain/educate/correct about my universe that I should not have had to, but had to, because “STEM” is none of the things it claims to be and people are stupid and trying to get me to hurt them very badly and not just physically :
That hot fusion is what we are trying to achieve today and not the same as cold fusion
Nuclear fusion does not make nuclear waste or highly radioactive anything unless you are actively trying to do so
Using a nuclear weapon in space is NOT GOING TO CONTAMINATE ANYTHING
“Do you have any idea how much power it actually takes to launch something that masses 5,000kg at a speed of 35,000km/s?!”
Attempting to fly something that masses a billion long tons, is 16 kilometers long, 4 kilometers wide, and nearly 2 kilometers tall even close to the L1 or L2 Lagrangian point is going to fucking break it like a twig.
Attempting to fly something that masses four billion long tons PERIOD is NOT A GOOD IDEA
NO, CARBON FIBER DOES NOT SOLVE EVERYTHING
IT DOES NOT NEED WINDOWS
Yes, painting something that flies in space is an extravagance, because between constant debris impacts making more debris and having to hold up to instantly-melts-your-eyeballs level of UV is stupid and expensive!
“ ... we have automatic license plate readers and accurate OCR and automatic bar code scanning to identify a ship is ‘unbelievable’?!”
SOLAR SAILS DO NOT WORK LIKE THAT
There is now an entire fucking chapter wasted on ELI5-ing the Paperclip Conjecture and I hate everyone but especially everyone involved in the snake oil bullshit that is current ML/AI. You people have made my life hell. Die in a fire.
IF IT NEEDS TO TRAVEL 4 MILLION KILOMETERS AT A SPEED OF 40,000 KILOMETERS PER HOUR, IT DOES NOT ARRIVE IN 2 MINUTES
Yes, quantum teleportation is actual, real, currently available science
THAT’S NOT HOW QUANTUM COMPUTING WORKS
THAT’S NOT HOW IT WORKS EITHER
“YES I FUCKING KNOW HOW QUANTUM COMPUTING WORKS STOP FUCKING REGURGITATING SLIDE DECKS FROM FRAUDS!”
Technology does not solve for stupidity!
Intelligence does not necessarily impart common sense!
“ If you do not stop equating unlimited electricity with post-scarcity I am going to literally bite your head off.”
Why did I think writing and/or having test-readers was a good idea again?

Battlestar re-imagined and the Expanse is Sci Fi made right. The Expanse takes the realism to another level however.
![]() 12/07/2018 at 02:28 |
|
Oh yeah... what I write is pretty damn close to the Expanse. Think: “I was told there would not be math.” And then being hit in the face with a brick of equations. Which turns into an avalanche of them.
I’ve honestly spent as much time on research as I have on writing and I still don’t know exactly how much energy I need to operate these weapons of mass extinction.
