It doesn’t usually rain out here in SoCal, so my driving is even more defensive and grandmotherly than usual

I had to resist the urge to SEND IT on summer tires.

The section of the PCH in Malibu that closed today due to mudslides was a part that I passed through twice on my way to work. Once until I found a closed road with a mercedes stuck in a mud pit and then a second time when I turned around to escape. I also used a canyon road that was later closed due to large boulders. Then the 101 Freeway was absolutely flooded when I got on there instead. It took 2 hours to get to work, which was double the usual time. Somehow I didnt drown my Subaru thankfully. Miata would have died a watery death by either hydroplaning into a wall or just straight up drowning in a puddle.
From a rock on the canyon road I took first thing in the morning:

Maybe I should upload my dash cam footage of some car swimming.
Saw this car stuck in the mud in person , was excited to see news photos of it too:

I was happy to have snow tires on my Subaru. It was mid-upper 40s most of the drive and everything was wet. No hydroplaning at all!

Gnarly...
Do post some dashcam highlights, and keep driving safe!

Ahhh you got lucky there. My choices were either tackling rain & temps in the 40s with summer tires or all-seasons from the first Bush Jr. administration. Wasn’t so bad driving around with the top up. My coworker almost had to do it in his 996 but it broke.
Let me know how your Miata search goes. I had my eye on several BRG NBs when I was in the market but they were all sold before I could make an offer.

Im confirmed to be looking at a BRG SE Miata on Sunday morning. Wont be buying it that day but if I can get the price low enough im pretty determined to buy it assuming the ad is an accurate depiction of the car. Wouldnt be the first time a car is entirely different from the ad though lol... Ideally I will be following the NADA guide as a starting price and systematically document things wrong that justify my offer. It helps that I basically own the exact same car and have driven it 80k from about the same mileage.
