Today’s launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 to the ISS went well, though the landing of the booster back at the Cape didn’t:

Tweets from Elon Musk indicate a stalled hydraulic pump cripp led one of the grid fins that guide the first stage back to the landing platform, imparting a uncontrolled spin to the rocket the other three could not mitigate.

As part of their SOP, the booster is initially aimed at a point just off shore from the landing pad, so that it will impact the ocean instead should this very even occur.

This is SpaceX’s first failure to land an F9 (that they intended to recover) in 27 attempts going back to 2016.

Given how extraordinary and novel  it still feels to even be able to land and recover a booster, that’s a good record.

It took me a second to realize I recognized the name in the title.  But he should be safe since the payload kept going!

Watched it from the office, beautiful day for it. Heard the twin booms and thought they stuck the landing. Bummer to lose a huge piece of hardware, but assuming it may be somewhat salvageable.  I’ve been a couple hundred yards off the ccafs pads in my boat and I still can’t believe what we do.  Hats off to all the missile men.
