Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last few weeks you already know that there are to huge new frogs coming to the Mid-size truck pond in 2020. The Jeep Gladiator and the Rivian RT1.

Kinja'd!!!

Other than their segment, these two trucks were designed with entirely different ideas in mind. The Jeep staying old school, with a BOF design, and straight axles front and rear, it’s also available with a manual transmission, and a diesel engine although the two are mutually exclusive.

The Rivian is a full electric built on a “skateboard” platform, which I believe is the logical future for automotive design. It is meant to be a real pick of the future.

Their price ranges could over lap. with the Gladiator ranging from 35-60k, and the RT1 50-70k. The Jeep wins in towing capacity by about 2500lbs, and the Rivian wins in max payload by about 150 lbs. another thing they have some what in common is the ability to lock the axles... kinda of. while the Jeep actually can have locking axles, the RT1's 4 individual motors can act as tho they are lock too each other. Another thing they have in common is being built here in the USA. The Rivian is being built in Ohio Illinois in an old Mitsubishi plant.

Their interiors couldn’t be more different. The Jeep’s is almost a carry over from the JLU, with a bit more rear leg room. It tries to ride the fence between old school, and new. Compared to the Rivian it’s busy. The Rivian has SCREENS.

Kinja'd!!!

Both trucks boast unique features, of coarse the Jeep has a removable top, easily its most definable feature. Nothing else available in the US market give you a truck bed, and a convertible. The Rivain being all electric has a frunk, and a neat rear pass tru, its also has a tailgate that folds down completely to get out of the way.

No doubt they are both game changers, but which one would you rather have?

I’m being pedantic, but I believe the old Mitsubishi plant the Rivian is going to be built at is in Bloomington/Normal Illinois, not Ohio.

That being said, I’d much rather have the Rivian. It looks better, definitely doesn’t have the same stigmatisms the Jeep would have (both Bro Truck and Jeep Bro), it looks significantly better, it’s faster, and the interior looks like a very nice place to spend time. Add this to the fact I’m from central Illinois and like to support local companies, the Rivian is the clear winner for me.

You’re probably right I know the old DSM cars were built in Illinois.

I think I’d go for the Rivian too. but I also like the Jeep a lot. I still haven’t made up my mind. IV the RT1 had a range extending motor I’d be sold.

First, there is no way you are getting a rivian on time and in budget for 65k.

Second they aren’t entirely comparable . If I am going to be in the backcountry for 3 days I wont find any charging stations.

The Rivian is a cool truck but its not a replacement for an off road truck.

If $$$ is no object, or somebody else is paying for it, and I had to choose between the two, I’d take the Rivain.

If I’m paying for it with my own actual $$$, neither. The value proposition isn’t there for either of them, I’d rather buy a full size truck off the lot with $10k in rebates. You can get a really nice 1500 for ~$40k and a 2500 diesel for ~$50k as long as you negotiate right and don’t go nuts with the options.

Parking will be a bit more difficult. It will also not work as well for chatting up Jeep bros or EV dorks, if that’s your thing . Everything else it will be able to do more and better, however.

Yes, it’s the old DSM plant. A range extender for the Rivian would be absolutely fantastic. To me the Jeep seems to have more compromises with a small, short bed. I don’t tow so I have no use for that, but I do haul things very occasionally.

I’m not saying they are Apple s to Apples. I’m saying they are both mid- sized trucks. Which one y ou want dep en ds heavily on how you’re going to use it. Obviously the Jeep is the one for you.

I really think the RT1 needs a range extender, loose the pass though behind the cab and use the space for an engine a nd 10 gallon tank ,. A small engine could double as a campsite generator !

Unfortunately your probably rigth about the 50-70k price. I think thats a “white lie” to fool investors, and early adopters, especially when they are already taking 1000 dollar deposits .

You’d have to bring a big generator and run it a long time. Let’ s say you use 60kwh a day on the trail (low esti mate) , you’d need to run a generator like this

Kinja'd!!!

for 27 hours or more straight to replace it.

or one of these for 6 hours

Kinja'd!!!

I’d rather bring a couple of these

Depends on what you value. If you’re looking for a pickup solely for payload and towing, that’s the best option. If you’re looking for a truck to off-road, the Gladiator is the best option, and if you’re looking for a DD that can also do truck stuff, the Rivian is probably your best bet.

I’ve very interesting in seeing what they reveal. Best guess is a more utilitarian LR4, based on spy shots and the platform it uses.

For as long as I’ve wished the Scrambler would make a comeback, I still have to say I’d probably pick the Rivian. I’d use this to commute more than anything, and the fuel savings are too much to pass up to me.

And, seeing how I wouldn’t need to use the truck part all that often (or tow), the Rivian just makes more fiscal sense to me.

If I were to be using it as a truck and off-roading a lot, then of course I’d choos e the Jeep.

I’m taking the Gladiator until the warranty is gone because FCA. I’m also probably never taking the roof off because I don’t like convertibles and in never driving without doors because I’ve been t-boned. I just can’t do electric because I need a lot of range and might be in an apartment soon so I don’t know if I can charge it.

What I’d prefer is a Tacoma or maybe the new Ranger depending on reviews and reliability.

Agreed that it depends on what you value. I think i t eventually comes back to the cost side of things. If $$$ is not an object, then whatever tickles your fancy at the moment is the proper choice. If $$$ is a concern, then even going from a $60k Jeep to a $40k pickup and side-by-side will be a better option if you value off roading. A $40k pickup and a $30k GTI will be better if you need both a truck and a DD, instead of a $70k EV truck.

I am very excited by the Rivain, especially if it goes into production. It’s a very compelling truck with a lot of potential. The design is nice, the interior looks good, there are a lot of innovative and cool design features, and the range is more than enough to cover my commute and most little truck projects. However, the half dozen or so times a year I’m doing truck stuff outside the range of the Rivain are pretty important and the charging network where I’d need to go isn’t quite there yet so I’d have to have the Jeep, but only just. Being able to take the doors/roof/windshield off is a nice bonus though.
