I would rock the hell out of one of these. Maybe worth restoring one some day? Who knows

A friend of mine does business with the seller regularly and had been for years. Nice guy. Goes all out and does his builds properly.

Everybody wants a Wagoneer with all the modern conveniences and a reliable engine and yadda yadda.

Then they find out what doing one actually right including fixing all the foibles like the rear window regulator, miscellaneous electronics, their insistence on the OE seat material, etcetera costs.

And they go buy a CPO Cayenne Turbo for less.

Even ones without LS engines seem to have been running away in price lately. So much so that some other interesting fake wood and real wood options start to open up.

Kinja'd!!!

This was hammered at $45k, for example.

A friend is selling one locally, mostly original I suspect. I don’t know what he’s asking but I’m sure it’s under anything on BaT.

That is cool but I don’t know if I would cross shop the two the images they give off are totally different

Not a natural cross-shop at first glance, but both have a big straight engine with RWD-based platform, both are comfortable and fairly tall (the wagoneer was sold as semi-lux) , both are wood or wood-accented, the Packard is capable of gravel roads and has decent modern-crossover-like ground clearance, both have wagon seating and a roof rack. For a cheaper cross-shop, one could compare a Country Squire wagon from ‘62 or so until some time in the ‘70s. Or, if 4WD availability outweighed everything, you could cross-shop with a ‘60s-’70s Suburban or a Willys Wagon.

There’s something of the classy and the old-school in a Wagoneer, but there are other ways to get similar results depending on taste... if one has a little imagination.

Not according to some of these shops, that claim they make money hand over fist.

Because they’re cutting corners, doing things sloppy and half-assed , and just there to make a buck.

Nobody who really cares about these things is even making decent money if they’re doing it right. If you’re in the 80's, you’re dealing with AMC products from a time where they could barely pay their workers. Which means the quality on some parts ranges from ‘subpar’ to ‘they actually shipped this?!’ And it’s wildly inconsistent as well, so NOS isn’t a guarantee of good part. Half the time your NOS part is going to need restored out of the box. (And t hat’s actually pretty optimistic.)

Know what it actually costs to do an SJ frame absolutely correctly ? Way more than you’re guessing. WAY more. You need to NDT the whole thing to check for cracks and weld every crack and weak point . Then you’re off for several rounds of sand and media blasting even if there’s no rust. Which is followed by a round of grinding off nearly EVERY weld except your repair welds. At which point you need frame jig time and a welder that can charge over $75/hr, who will weld in new frame hardware. Then all the new welds get NDT’d. (Remember, this is basically your ONLY crash structure.) After that, it’s off to be galvanized to reduce your corrosion risk. You’ve got to let it sit a bit after that, and then it’s off to an actual automotive paint shop for a lot of black paint. If you’re doing it AMC accurate, that means no undercoating and no clear. So you need to layer the paint thick for protection. VERY thick. After that you start putting in the all new hardware for the body mounts, axle mounts, suspension, etcetera. Every single bolt and every piece of rubber’s got to be replaced.

And that’s just the frame . Zero complex metalwork, no upholstery, and not even one bit of mechanical yet.

You are of course correct their purpose was likely quite similar. Perhaps with the exception of going off road and perhaps towing with the Jeep. The hang up for me that puts them in different categories has to be the marketing. The Jeep stating “Only one thing handles horse country better than my Wagoneer, but it can’t seat six.” The Packard was marketed more as having the comfort of the sedan with the utility of a wagon. To some extent the perception and therefore character of the cars is distinct.

I guess as the old saying goes then buy the best you can afford in an effort to hopefully alleviate some of these issues and let the last guy be the one sunk the money into it .

To some extent the perception and therefore character of the cars is distinct.

Which is exactly why I’m saying a savvy buyer could cross-shop them - because nobody else is, but the constraint is largely marketing and artificial. Rooted in expectations. Prestige and respect are at similar levels, and they’re surprisingly similar cars when you get down to it. Call it convergent evolution, if you wish. This is similar to developing the ear to recognize a tune similarity between a soul song and a metal song - outside-the-box thinking that is the mark of a prepared and devious mind.
