A friend of mine has a Miata. It’s an automatic (don’t hate - he has a bad knee, and constant clutch use aggravated it). He knows I recently got a small wood lathe, and is interested in having me make him a new shift knob. I do have a scrap of walnut left over from the chair. I haven’t had a chance to look at the existing shift knob. Do they generally just screw on/off, and if so, is there a standard size? Is there anything else I should be aware of for making him a new one?

What generation? I think NC and ND knobs are screw-on but NA/NB have the OD button in the shifter. I’ve tried to rip the knob off a NB to get to the console behind it but it wouldn’t come off.

I t hink it’s an NC. If it's just screw on, that'd be ideal.

Yes, from some quick research it is threaded, 8x1.25mm according to Miata parts supplier Thompson Automotive . Even though it’s an automatic, make sure to have the knob weighted to be equal to or heavier than the factory knob just for that satisfying feel when you put it in gear.
