Ram made new HD pickups that don’t make me want to gouge my eyes out.

“With 45 photos showing four trim levels, consider this the unofficial reveal of the new Ram HD. Today our spy photographers were in the right place at exactly the right time. We managed to catch a good portion of the new Ram HD family for 2020 completely uncovered, trucking down the road. We don’t see a dually in the mix, but just about everything else is there. Specifically, we’ve got a Laramie Longhorn, a Limited, and Limited MegaCab in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! trim. When do we reach peak grill height? When I first saw the new Chevy HD I thought it was a photoshop. Now Ram went and did the same. And I’m sure Ford’s grills look equally tall. It’s gotten so out of hand that you don’t have a SHRED of the actual color of the truck anywhere on the front in the above examples. .

I can’t help but notice, this is not the new body that the 1500 got, this is the same body that they have been using since ‘09 with a different grille and taillights.

Why are designs so ugly now? I know they focus group them, but I refuse to believe that people have so little taste.

The grill itself isn’t much, if at all, bigger than the outgoing model. It’s the surrounds that are the wurst.

I hope there’s a trim - or option - that allows for a non-Fu Manchu grille with body color surrounds. The idea of chrome or unpainted  being the only two options makes me sick a bit

The Tacoma might look better if it wasn’t as old and stale as Thanksgiving dinner. A new grille does not make a new truck, Toyota.

It’s basically the existing HD trucks with updated styling to match the 1500s. This will allow them to keep using the majority of their tooling that is already paid for, with the last major update being from 2013/2014 model years.

This will also allow them to delay the launch of the full redesign for another 2-3 years. The existing powertrains should remain competitive until then. If they need to advertise more powahhhh it’s as easy as cranking up the boost on the diesels.

This is good business. Minimal investment for maximum $$$.

That’ll be an extra “sport package” for $2-3k like the existing ones. Agreed that it will look better, not sure if it wouldn’t be easier to just order the basic black and have a body shop repaint the other bits.

I wonder if this is just a stop gap to have a newer looking truck for the 2020 model year until they get the new body fully ready, or if they plan on keeping this body long term?

12/04/2018 at 17:52

Kinja'd!!!0

Well you do get a better equipped vehicle for the exact same price.

Some bells n whistles are good, like a decent stereo system, comfortable seats and A-TRAC has saved my butt a time or two, what I don’t want to do is spend a few grand more to have soft-touch materials and a more carlike seating position in the Colorado, at the expense of capability

Kinja'd!!! Pickup_man > Nibbles
12/04/2018 at 18:00

Kinja'd!!!0

One would certainly hope so. What really makes this interesting/confusing though is that Ram skipped the 2019 model year completely on the HD trucks, going straight from 2018, to 2020. I guess I assumed that since the 1500 was all new for 2019, that the HD would follow in 2020 (especially since there are no 2019's). It’ll be interesting to see what happens for the 2021 MY.

If equipment and capability is all you want for a good price, why not just get a half ton? All these mid size trucks are ‘lifestyle’ trucks and are priced accordingly. Full sizers come with heavy discounts.

Kinja'd!!! jasmits > CRider
12/04/2018 at 18:52

Kinja'd!!!0

Full size won’t fit in my garage, wouldn’t have fit properly in the parking spot I had before(when I bought it), won’t fit up PNW two tracks, won’t fit in Seattle downtown parking spots, have worse departure and breakover angles and I drag enough frame and hitch as it is, won’t articulate as well because they have stiffer suspension that’s meant to have more of a load than camping gear and skis , and as I don’t use it to tow often he added capability from a full size means nothing to me(I meant off road capability, not stuff hauling c apability). And before you suggest a Wrangler I drive almost 40,000 miles a year and don’t want to do that in an FCA product, also a four door Tacoma TRD Off Road is cheaper than a base JLU with no options except a hardtop(not even A/C)

Kinja'd!!! CRider > jasmits
12/04/2018 at 18:59

We ll there’s no doubt that you are *exact l y* the target demographic for a TRD Tacoma.

Kinja'd!!! jasmits > CRider
12/04/2018 at 19:11

Kinja'd!!!0

The lifestyle argument sets me off when paired with advice to get a full size, because yeah, it is mainly a lifestyle purchase. S o are most trucks of any size on the road BUT just about every midsize owner I know takes their truck off pavement and has a bed full of mountain bikes or skis or camping gear every weekend while most full-size owners I know are afraid of scratching the paint on their “definitely -not-a- lifestyle-purchase” and if they even nick the capability their truck has to offer they use it to haul loads or tow boats my Tacoma could handle. Of course some full size owners need and use the capability, but most just bought it because they like it and they haul some mulch once a year.

Kinja'd!!! CRider > jasmits
12/04/2018 at 20:04

Kinja'd!!!0

Well most full size trucks are “lifestyle” trucks too. Most of the full size truck owners I know also go off road (or have dirt bikes) and tow trailers with them. That doesn’t mean a mid size truck wouldn’t do the job, but there’s a lot to be said for the power and room of a full size truck . It’s not the price difference that keeps full size trucks out of the question since Tacomas can cost more than Tundras. It really is just a different style for most people . Do you really think a TRD Pro buyer is that differe nt than a Raptor buyer?

I wish Ram could pick a grille style and stick with it. I vote the Ram horns, that one has potential, even if now it’s a bit hit and miss. Just give us variations of a theme FCA, not several different themes, that makes no sense.

Kinja'd!!! jasmits > CRider
12/05/2018 at 18:38

Kinja'd!!!0

Not at all! Just can’t stand full size buyers who don’t use their truck for work or even exceed what a midsize can do for their recreational uses calling midsize trucks ‘lifestyle’ purchases when they’ve never towed more than 5k with their full size . Yea, I could’ve gotten an F150 for 30 grand but bigger != better depending on what you’re planning on doing with it.

Kinja'd!!! CRider > jasmits
12/05/2018 at 19:32

Kinja'd!!!0

There is one big reason I’d go for a full siz e truck: Power. You can’t really get a mid sizer with any real engine choic es and none are what I’d call fast. T he F- 150 has like 6 different engines to choose from while the Ranger is getting one . The V6 in the Tacoma is just OK power wise and the Canyonaro twins have an OK v6 and a damn slow diesel.

Is that a stupid reason to buy a bigger truck? Yes.
