My car had her birthday yesterday Oppo! My 2009 Hyundai Accent hatchback (affectionately called ‘Humdrum’ for being an absolutely bottom of the barrel trim with no features whatsoever) was built in Hyundai’s Ulsan plant in South Korea on December 3rd, 2009. I bought her in April 2013 with 54,000kms for $6900 Canadibucks all-in as a replacement for my frame/subframe-killed-by-rust 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5TS.

This is her the day I brought her home, complete with her Nova Scotia Temporary Permit in the window. The dealership had cleaned it inside and out, but curse the gravel road I live on for already having had dirtied the rocker panels...

Since that day, we’ve traveled 95,000kms around this province together...and I mean “we”! Aside from once when we had to get my neighbour to move it when I wasn’t home, and the spurts that mechanics have had to drive it on test drives or into and out of garage bays, I’ve been the only one to drive it this entire time as nobody in my family drives stick but me and, though I talk to my friends daily, we’re all so busy and scattered I RARELY get to meet up with them in person these days. Kindof an interesting thought to think you’re pretty much the only person to have driven a certain car for almost these entire 5 years and 7 months...

Through sweltering sunny summer days...

...this little navy blue-gray egg has carried me safely in humble comfort to and from family gatherings, meet-ups with friends, work from 4 different jobs, moved my brother home from university for the last time, to various car shows and work conferences. It has never left me stranded ONCE. The closest she came to doing so was when !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! leaving me effectively running off a sporadic 2 cylinders...luckily I was within 8km of my usual garage and she carried me safely there despite her malady with me driving very gingerly.

I haven’t done a HUGE amount to it over the years...some ‘new’ alloys for summer rims from a 1998 Ford Escort fitted with 3D-modeled and 3D-printed center caps that I designed... !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ...installed LED rear taillight bulbs, reverse lamps, license plate bulbs, side repeater bulbs and interior bulbs...replacement parts like !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ...a dashcam... !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ...a shift knob a close friend gave me that I used in my old Subie as well...and, most recently, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

As basic and unloved as it is being a Korean economy car, I love this little thing. Your car is what you make it. :)

Here’s looking forward to another solid and enjoyable 95,000kms! :D
