Anyone else have a countdown for a car they wanna import?
My list is long, but an accord wagon SiR sits pretty close to the top.

No, because if I did, I would spend the next 12 months obsessively looking for the earliest possible example so I could import it that much sooner.
Remember, it’s date of manufacture not model year.

it’s a wait that is perfectly justified. I have no desire to ever purchase a new car, but if this came to the states i’d probably be looking for a low interest rate loan...

i’m supremely jealous. especially since these are dirt cheap across the pond.
I don’t know how you do it with just the bike. I’d be broke and with like 15 cars.

I had to buy an HVAC unit this past wekend so my dream of owning one was cut in half($4200), but it shouldn’t take to long to earn it back. Space is more of an issue than money.

It’s people like you that have me SERIOUSLY considering starting up a side gig. Think Tom McParland without the negotiating, but for locating the exact car you want, primarily stuff like this.

Yup. I fi had the space and $ combo now I would have gotten a V8 already , but we are 4 years away from the V12(and the one I really want anyways ) so It’s worth the wait. Plus I have a 5.0L Toyota engine in the garage already. It’s just lacking 4 cylinders.

that could actually be lucrative. especially if you partner with a trustworthy connection in japan.
I’d pay an extra $500-$1k to take the hassle out of locating the right example and negotiating with someone that I can barely communicate with because of the language barrier.

Can’t blame you, probably worth holding out for, rather than getting one, sinking money into it, and moving on later.
Something like that is tempting for me too, but I have the same space issue, along with already having a hobby car capable of consuming every dollar I devote to it.

In four years I’ll be 28 and will most definitely have more income, more space and possibly a 911 already, so liv ing my Japanese businessman dream will come to the forefront and I can buy a great example and then put trumpet intakes on it and be the happiest man in the world.

Anything I have wanted to import I could at this point. Well, if I
a) Had the money to
and
b) Could possibly explain to my car-hating wife why I would do this

Planning on a lottery? I know housing there is super cheap, but 911s aren’t :)
Don’t forget the doilies.

If the lottery is my wife getting her masters in nursing it’s a good start. Housing isn’t suuuper cheap but we’re already in a good spot. I’m 24 and we’re doing pretty well, plus it won’t be a new 911 anyways.

What if she says the money can only be used for a bland CUV/SUV and other related baubles?
Average detached house is 7 figures in my zipcode, and even in cheaper areas around here (where you can get a house for a mere 500K) few people under 40 seem to “own” without aid from mommy and daddy, it’s cheap there :)

I told her she is getting the next new car and that has seemed to make her happy for now. I’m offering a Cayenne or Macan.
Our townhouse was 240k. We bought it on our own and are working saving our way towards house part 2. We had some help(from a trust) with the renovations, but the house is 100% ours and will be rented. There is a chance of us taking over the MILs current residence as she moved to Key West, the house is quite large, and she doesn’t want to live there by herself. It’s quite the house and there will probably never be another chance to own a house like it.

That’s a good wifey mobile. Maybe import a Toyota Harrier , cool name , and a lot cheaper. Not as fashionable or high tech though.
Indeed, housing wealth can be generational or dynastic.

She already has a RX so RHD would just be an annoyance.
Yeah, we both lucky with our college being paid for by our parents, but other than that we’ve done pretty much everything on our own and can continue to do that, but it seems like were earning the trust to take care of these assets that are more about their importance than value.

Is she into cars at all (other than brand?)? Any chance of selling her on something quirky? Gotta get into it young, I think interest wanes with age, thinking of my mom who drove things like a Ford retractable and a Beetle with a Porsche engine now drives a white Camry (and loves it).
Real brick houses are relatively rare out here, maybe one of the things from points east I wish were more common here. But when you live in a forest, you build from wood. I wish I could earn a house for free ;)

She just wants something a big SUV that is comfortable. I can’t even convince her a E63 AMG looks good. She only sometimes cares about cars and it’s usually when I bring something home that is cool.
It won’t be free haha. Old Houses are expensive to maintain.

Not LX or GX? They aren’t cool per se, but they hit your brand preference and will be durable, if anything, and you’ll get lots of gasoline-based rewards points or rebates.
If someone gave me a house and said all I have to do is maintain it, I’d think I got a free house, not exactly a bootstrapping Horatio Alger situation ;)

I think the RX is the biggest she really wants and I want her to drive something I like to drive as well. The GX and LX are big enough she doesn’t seem to want to deal with the size funny enough. I started looking at those when we were unsure about the RX’s repairability.
We’ll probably end up taking over the mortgage as well but that’s if we get into the house.

That’s good, the size limit. My sister was on her husband’s case to get a bigger vehicle (when they married, she had a Sonic, he a Tribeca), so they bought a fancy and not exactly cheap Suburban. Now he drives it, and she takes the Tribeca. Gotta be careful what you wish for. I think we are now getting to the point where Macan are depreciating, Cayenne can depreciate hard, then hit a bottom.
If I inherited a boomer-style mortgage (read: taken when wage to price ratios were much different than today), I’d be happy too.

So then you’d just be getting free equity ;)

Haha yeah, free equity is pretty much it. There’ s a lot of newer money in our families . It pretty m uch started with our parents and grandparents which is way different than a lot of families in the southeast where it goes back to the plantations .

I believe that about the south, a friend of mine worked in GA, and had the irritating job of deciding land use permits for one of the 358 dorito-sized counties in that crazy state (small government, preached but not practiced). He said that the established good old boy families owned everything, socio-economic mobility was stunted, and local royalty basically got what they wanted, no questions asked, if you deny it, someone above you will allow it. He quit and moved back to the first world, as he didn’t want bad decisions on his resume. Cheap housing though. Reminds me of the line about the one who preaches about hard work and winning is the one who inherited a store or farm from his father. Bootstraps! And maybe taxing them less will trickle down to everyone.

For the most part, it seems Tennessee has avoided that, especially in the main four cities. There are just some rich people that live among us. And Tennessee only has 96 counties *smug face*

It’s not as much a thing on the best coast. Here we have techbro and related professional wealth (both luckiest generation and younger), real estate wealth (mostly luckiest generation and older, some younger speculators via the bank of mom and dad), and often sketchy offshore-based residency purchaser wealth. You may get the dynastic family wealth in rural counties, the ones who complain about tax proceeds benefiting populated areas most, not wanting to admit if it wasn’t for earlier contributions of population centers, they wouldn’t have paved roads and other luxuries at all.
WA has much less than half that amount of counties, about 10% more population, and over 50% more land. Maybe the blue way is most efficient. I swear the high county-count south is just kind of a make-work project for connected people. I am sure there are generations who have all worked for the same often redundant departments.
