Bush people are piling into a plane that says United States of America on the side.

Usually those are ones to carry president. But doesn’t Trump have one of these too? Whose plane is it? HW’s own Air Force 1* or did T rump lend Air Force 1?

Please don’t get all political. Trump or not Trump. I just want to know if old presidents get to keep their Air Force planes?

Former Presidents do not get to keep government property from their tenure, especially planes or helicopters. While I’m no expert, and I have no clue what plane they’re using since I haven’t seen the coverage, I’d assume it’s probably the backup (or one of the backups) or one of the other similar planes (VP or whomever).

We’ve got a fleet of small planes (I know there are 757s...) that have a very similar livery used by other members of the government, (vice pres, etc.)  Wouldn’t be surprised if they are sometimes used for folks still under the care of the secret service, (as the Bush family would be.)   The 757s are sharp looking planes...

AF 1 is the plane that the president is on. Regardless of the plane, if 45 was in a 152 it would be AF 1. I would think if Bush Sr. is on a plane it would just be the tail number since he was not the current president.

There are two 747s that act as Air Force One (technically only Air Force One if the president is on board). Additionally, there are several VIP 757s that have a similar livery (Trump flies on these a surprising amount, I don’t know if the interior is more to his taste, or he likes them because they are more like his plane, or what. Normally they are only used for airports too small for a 747, but Trump seems to use them even when that is not the case).

I’d guess you are looking at one of the 757s. Extending the use of that would not be unusual.

Edit: I am wrong, they are using one of the 747s. As I said, there are two. Strictly speaking they are VC-25s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_VC-25  

These would have been the planes Bush flew in as president (he probably also flew the 707-based AF1 as well, as the second 747 only came into service in 1990.)

There are 2 747s used as air force one, they are only called Air Force one when the sitting President is on it.  If the president is flying in a Cessna 152 that Cessna is called Air Force 1.  The 747s usage has to be approved by the White House as they are reserved for the exclusive use of the President.  So for this flight they will be going by their tail number for a call sign not Airforce 1.

I believe there are actually two planes marked “Air Force One”. However, it’s only referred to as AF1 if the POTUS is on board.

Well only if the plane is an Air Force plane. Which is why his helicopter is Marine One, and the S-3 that W flew to “Mission Accomplished” was Navy One. Nixon took a United flight, which was given the title Executive One.

Just to further clarify what everyone else has said, there are two 747-200B aircraft that the USAF has designated VC-25 and are used to carry the President and First Family around. When the President is aboard, they are known as Air Force One. Similarly, the Marines have several VH-3D and VH-60N helicopters that are known as Marine One when the President is aboard. When George W Bush was flown to the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln on an S-3 Viking, it was known as Navy One . Finally, a ny aircraft, when carrying the President, would be called _ One, depending on the originating branch of service. If you’ve ever seen the movie Air Force One , there’s a scene during the climax where the President is transferred from the VC-25 to an HC-130 , call sign Liberty 24. The pilot signals the successful transfer by announcing “Liberty 24 is changing call signs , Liberty 24 is now Air Force One!”.

George HW Bush is being flown on one of the VC-25s, which for this flight has been designated Special Air Mission 41 , in honor of his being the 41st President.

Actually, any non-military aircraft that carries the president is called Executive One. This happened once, when Nixon flew on a UAL 707. Of course, the Marine Corps helicopter is called Marine One, and when George W Bush landed on an aircraft carrier to celebrate “victory” in Iraq, the S-3 Viking he flew in was called Navy One.

In the early days of presidential jet flight, the jets were called SAM 26000 and SAM 27000 based on their AF registration. SAM stood for Special Air Mission. So, this is an homage to GHWB as the 41st President. T hey don’t get to call it AF1 since Bush is not in office.

Aww, I liked the 152 I flew... I mean I’m sure there are many much better planes, but shit can is a bit strong. I even had a soft spot for the flying club’s 150, though that was dated enough that it was really just a backup in case one of the 152s couldn’t go.

The other 707 is at the Wright-Patterson Air F orce Museum, the reason the Reagan Library got one is it was under construction when the 747s were bought and was built to publicly display it on the west coast.

No, theres only two presidential 747s, both over 30 years old. Ex-presidents might fly on them from time to time after leaving office, if performing some official duty on behalf of the current president, but, generally, they would either fly commercial or on a private charter. It is sort of protocol that a deceased president's body be transported on an official plane.

Additionally SAM 970 is at the Museum of Flight in Seattle and SAM 971 is at Pima Air and Space in Tuscon. Those are slightly different in that they weren’t designated exclusively for presidential use, but they were purchased specifically for Ike, and flew him, and many subsequent presidents around. I can’t find any info about what happened to the third VIP 707/VC-137, SAM 972, but presumably it was scrapped. Another distinction is that these predated L oewy’s classic livery, so only got that retroactively.

No question that the 757 has some aesthetically pleasing proportions, and that livery looks sharp on everything (I’m hoping Trump’s demand for the new ones to be painted differently is ignored, or that his successor immediately gets them repainted) .

Yeah Jackie Kennedy was the one who wanted our planes to look nice and like a military plane and had Loewy make the iconic design we see today.

LBJ’s limo is at the LBJ Library in Austin.

And his JetStar, which he called Air Force One Half, is at his ranch out near Johnson City. He had his own private runway, complete with government-run control tower. He was out there a bunch. But he also held lots of meetings at this ranch. He wasn’t just playing golf or clearing brush.

Similar, but not identical. If I remember correctly, on other VIP planes, the blue stripe does not extend all the way to the top of the cockpit. I believe only the presidential plane carries the full blue front.
