Alternate title: gmctavish needs to work on shooting with a camera that will let him mess up

Kinja'd!!!

I was a genius and wasn’t paying attention to my light meter, so I didn’t realize that obviously the shutter couldn’t go fast enough to compensate for a wide aperture.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

^I think that’s a bit of motion blur from my shaky-ass hands, but maybe I was just out of focus. As I learned, I need to work on using a manual focus lens.

^Hey look I finally noticed that my meter needle was above the fastest shutter speed the camera is capable of

Kinja'd!!!

.....and then promptly forgot, I guess.

There you have it. Nothing like a mostly manual camera to teach you that you’re not a good photographer, you’ve just had cameras that make it really hard to screw up photos. I’m looking forward to putting another roll through this thing and maybe taking some decent photos.

Don’t worry all but 2 of the above images look good to me. If you take okay pictures they will look good to a normal person.

As an owner of a manual Chinon CS, I recognise those problems. But I think it will help you become a better photographer in the end.

Those photos look pretty cool though, their imperfections work.

There’s nothing aesth etically wrong with blowing out highlights if that’s what you meant to do. If you didn’t mean to, pretend you meant to. I like a couple of the wagon shots that are not technically “correct.”

Don’t discount what you are adding to the outcome besides the technical work of getting the correct exposure and focus. The choices of subject, lighting, composition, along with sometimes luck and timing, are what will make your photos good (that Volvo .) Technique is just there to get you down the last mile.

I recommend The Negative by Ansel Adams. It’s not heavy , but it gives you a lot to practice. W hat you learn from that can apply to digital too, but it’s especially important with film.

Please keep posting these.
