Personally, it relaxes me a lot.
Maybe it’s very wasteful but, whenever I feel bad I drive... as much as I can for as long as possible. Hopefully with some place to go, otherwise driving in circles might be as discouraging as not driving at all.
I guess that one of the more upsetting days I’ve had yet was during a high school graduation party. I was backstabbed by a friend and I j us t felt nauseous the rest of the evening. I was taken back home in a cab at around 2AM and I just slept some three or four hours. I still woke up shaken the fuck up.
I knew I was sober, the night before I didn’t drink at all, but I didn’t feel comfortable at home, or with myself I wanted to leave .
I took an old ipod, an aux cord, and left, somewhere, with my jeep and without my phone . I was still wearing my day-old clothes and dawn hadn’t even broken. I drove for at least four hours around the highways that enter Mexico City. It relaxed me... I still don’t know why. But burning gas made my day significantly better.

I absolutely love it. After I was born the only thing that would put me to sleep was to drive me around - the glove box door on my folks VW beetle was all scuffed up from my shoes kicking it. It’s got to be a genetic thing - some crazy Swedish/German gene mix - Scandinavian flick + autobahn/nordschleife bastard or something....

Why do you think I drove 130kms out of my way for a tunnel that is a 1/2 mile long, & see an another oppo while I was down that way? Shifting near red-line in confined tunnel while noise fills it just awakens the soul.

If someone pays for the fuel, I’ll drive all day. If not, I don’t want to put too many miles on my aging cars
I drive only to accomplish tasks now. 15 years ago, I drove for fun

It'd take me too long to push the wheelbarrow to wherever I'm going.

I drive because I love to drive. That’s a weird thing to say, but I have always loved driving. Like one of my high school buddies used to say, driving is like Disneyland on wheels. The day I got my license I disappeared for 3-4 hours just driving around and exploring with my best friend. It scared the hell out of my mom, because this was long before cell phones.
I can’t even begin to guess how many miles I’ve driven just driving to nowhere in particular. I know just about every inch of the front range of Colorado because of it. Even when I have jobs where I drive 8-10 hours a day, I’m never sick of it. Just today I went on a drive for about two hours listening to football and enjoying a cigar. Keep in mind, this is after I drove roughly 1500 miles for work this past week.
If I ever had to give up driving, I’m not sure I could cope.

It used to relax me when I was younger. That’s not to say it doesn’t today, but I’m vastly more aware of my increased and increasing responsibilities in life. When I was in my tends I had my first car, a supercharged MR2, t-tops, leather. Incredibly fast and nice for a first car in the eighties. I’d drive that car all night until sunrise many weekends as I was socially awkward and found it more relaxing to drive through the night than to spend the evening with people I had little in common with.
Lately, I’ve desperately wanted to go for those long all night drives, but my daily responsibilities forfeit that slightly less than my body does. All nighters are no longer repaid in days, but a week(s) .
It would be fantastic to go on a drive with the oppo guys this spring, but I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to make it as my third is due in March. Additionally, driving in groups is more stressful than driving with only myself to answer to.
Reading about you taking those drivers is therapeutic vicariously, enjoy them while you can before real life and its responsibilities force such joys to memories only.

Because the sensation of motion is basically my favorite thing, and being in a car lets me experience it without having to run.

If you want sensation of motion, nothing beats a motorcycle. Failing that, bicycle gets you more of it than a car IMO

S pent 3 months commuting about 140 miles a day 4 days a week for a job, then some time prior I had spent 2 semesters(10 months-ish) going 100 miles 4 days a week along the same route. It was not uncommon at the time to get 1000 miles in a week. A t first it was just a commute but as time wore on it became a time to wake up in the mornings, to listen to music for an hour without interruption, to appreciate the quality of air being rammed Int o your face past all the open windows at 75mph. I still do that trip a couple times a month but I miss it. I used to go on drives just for the fun of it , but in the thirsty Lexus a full tank is $70 or a full days wage after taxes.
In writing this rambling it occured to me that driving is so intertwined with my love of vehicles , that I cant describe why I like it. It has been the basis of my interest since 4 years old If not younger. An d after a certain point it’s like asking,”W hy do you like sweets?” Because its good.

I enjoy driving, always have. If I had more free time I’d probably go for a drive just for the sake of it, but that never happens anymore. It’s probably why I like driving my boat so much, because it’s always kind of aimless cruising; we often have a sort of destination in mind, but it’s not like driving a car on the road, by a long stretch. For one I can have a beer in my hand. Two, I am in what’s basically a giant convertible and my family can be with me - and/or a bunch of friends, too - all enjoying the ride, and being outdoors together. That, and the rumble of the V8 in the back. I’d go for cruises by myself at night in my old boat just to hear that 351 roaring. The new boat is quieter, which is good, but it’s not the same.
I can hear the
2,8
00 rpm rumble from here, just looking at that pic

You’re probably right, I just prefer vehicles where my head isn’t the roof.
