I’m inspired to write my timeline down. This will mostly be a list for reasons that will be obvious when you see how long it is. This is off the top of my head, mostly chronological. Got my license at 16 on 11/30/1992. Yesterday was my 42nd birthday.

02 BMW 325Xi Touring (wagon)

There’s a few more that I flipped really quickly, but that’s most of them. I really like cars, and the ability to fix them myself has enabled me to buy many broken ones cheap, enjoy the fix, and play with them for a bit before selling and making money. Plus there’s been 6-7 motorcycles, and 3 airplanes.   Of course some of those were My wife’s daily drivers too, so that knocks it down to 30   or so that were primarily me. That’s not as bad.

Looking at my list, I’ve never had a V8! That seems tragic to me. I’ll have to remedy that oversight in the near future. Maybe this summer after I’m done playing around with the BMW wagon and get the mileage on the leased Subaru down to where it should be.

Highlights? Miatas were awesome fun with 0 headaches. CRX was a lot of fun to drive, practical and reminds me a of a great time in my life. The 98 BMW convertible is absolutely at the very top of my list for fun, practicality, sound and another great period of time. Enjoyed my various Nissan trucks too.  Loved my MK5 GTI above all the other GTIs and of course the Porsche is very special to me as was my 2013 Jeep.

If I could go back and pick my top 3 it’d be my red 98 BMW 325i convertible, 2013 Jeep Rubicon and the 2006 GTI. Gun to my head, could only choose one for the rest of my life? Probably the 2006 GTI. That car was magical. F ast (had an APR tune) , comfortable, ton of room, great manual transmission, tartan seats and those 2 big doors gave great visibility and ease of access. Yeah, the GTI is the overall champ.

You owned a Baron? A Baron. That’s a fuel bill I never want to see in my life. Still own it?

not sure if the plane or the tipped jeep is the best picture here.

No, I sold it and my charter business in 2010. Had a great time doing it and broke even until the economy tanked.

You’re right, you don’t want to see the fuel bill. 32gph or so and at the time it was around $4 a gallon. 136 gallon tanks. It was a whole lot of money but it was also a whole lot of awesome.

That’s my favorite Jeep pic. Purchased new 02/04/13, dropped it over 02/06/13 with 621 miles on it. Crawling down the mountain it was glare ice, didn’t realize until it was too late. Slid a good 100ft before it hit a dry patch and went on the berm to the left and over it went. $13k in damage, Geico covered it with no issue. Didn’t even raise my rates. This pic is from the summit with 620mi on it.

Thanks, it was a great plane and I was fortunate to be in a place to be able to buy it and fly it regularly. Last I checked it’s living in Olive Branch Mississippi just outside of Memphis. I put about 600hr on it in the 4 years I owned it. One engine failure and replacement, rebuilt props, landing gear, fuel bladders and a few other misc things for maintenance. It wasn’t cheap but it was fun and gave me a great resume.

As long as you could charge someone for it. I keep revisiting ownership but honestly its 85% throw away money every year. Tough to even put 30 hrs on anything. I love ga planes but its a lifestyle id have to live outside the airline world too. Not sure i could do it beyond renting.

It is a cool thing to have. I’ve owned 3 GA planes now and I doubt I’ll do it again unless my son decides he wants to get a license. Just for myself and friends to cruise around the math works out in favor of renting (I say that, but reality is when I get home from flying at work I have no desire to get in another plane).

If he decides to fly it is different. I’ll buy something and give him the training he needs. We’d be able to get it done quickly and at a lower cost vs renting a plane and instructor.
