Picking up the Golf R (cousin to the true Oppo car of the year if you discount the obligatory Miata) at 10:00 AM tomorrow. Aiming to be in Capitol Hill at 4 :0 0 PM, on a route whose primary goal is to not be I-5.
Here’s the route as seen from, oh, 200 km up?
At the end of the day I should know if the whole German car aura is legit or not, right?

Real question, can you post a picture of the trunk if you post a follow up after you drive it?
For science.

Avoid JBLM and Tacoma. It always balls up there and Tacoma has been “under construction” for like 5 years

Yep, I’d take 512 to 167 up and skip that entire section of i5.
Welcome to the wonderful world of awd hatch life! M y blue r has been the most fun on 4 wheels I’ve ever owned. I’ve owned a second gen Camaro, s550 mustang GT, two corrado vr6's, wife’s mk7 gti, mk4 gti, crappy 4cyl poop brown 80's notchback mustang with a 4 speed that couldn’t drive past 55... the golf r beats them all.

Hah, I just realized that that’s not even half of the cars or trucks I’ve owned. I may have a problem.

Ah that makes sense; I’ll remember to look for 512 unless the traffic report is clear. Thanks!
Unfortunately this is just a rental, not a purchase.

Problem? Nawwwwww. You still have, like, a house to sleep in right? Then you’re good

Joint Base Lewis McCord. It’s a big Army and Air base South of Tacoma. Lots of traffic through there

I am in the preliminary stages of mabye, possibly, buying a new car soon. Golf R is on my long list, just worried about trunk space.

Ah right, I remember seeing lots of signs for that the time we went back down via Tacoma to take the dog to a sound-side dog park there.

Here’s a few shots of the cargo area with backpack for scale (and subwoofer because that’s how the owner of this car rolls I guess):
Sorry about the nighttime pics; I forgot about this both days until after I had finished the long drives and the sun had set.

Thank you, the back pack is perfect for scale and way better than 98% of the pics I found online . That is bigger than I expected.
I just read your AMA, w hat would you say you disliked the most about the car ? Besides the back seats.

Probably the shifter. It’s a bit notchy so you feel a big bump when you throw it fast between 3&4 or 5&6. It also has this weird behavior where the trans seems to grab the shifter once it’s a little bit out of neutral and complete the shift for you. I had to do the wiggle check a few times to make sure I was in neutral, and once I thought I was but I wasn’t.
