I’ve installed this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Which was mounted at the rear where my spare should be (seeings I won’t use the spare anyway). It’s runninng 2.5" piping, through a Magnaflow resonator mid van, then running this at the rear and keep my 2.25" duals coming out.

It now sounds perfect, with little to no resonance in the van!

i had a whole lot of success in getting rid of resonance, by primarily making certain that the exhaust pipe actually exited PAST the car/truck. i have a few that stopped under the truck, with either turn outs, or turndowns, or simply stopped under the truck/car. at rpm under a load, the ones that just terminated were the worst, followed closely by the ones that had just turndowns. but the exhausts that actually exited past the truck/car didnt resonate inside the car. i also got into the habit of making use of good rubbers to bind the exhaust to the holders........ it was easier, and about as effective to make my own exhaust rubbers out of old mud tires. 3 inch exhaust has been life. your results may vary. i had a long run of very similar “healthy” smallblock chevy with a “big cam”, headers, and 3 inch pipes...... also check to make sure you eliminate exhaust leaks at the joints......... when i had problems with those, i would cheat, and using some of the aluminium crush gaskets, would fill in irregularities with RTV ultra copper, let them set up a bit and tighten them before they fully set. so long as you didnt get REAL mean with rpm, or backing out of it suddenly the rtv would hold a good while. made a world of difference eliminating the minor leaks, for quieting down the resonance .........

I’ve heard great things about Vibrant products, but who needs a muffler?

I’ve had and really like magnaflow. You can change the frequency you hear most by adjusting where in the exhaust the muffler is placed.  Typically, the closer it is to the heads, the lower the exhaust note.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much room to “adjust” muffler location, it pretty much is where it can be, which is about the middle of the van.

I am hoping splitting it to duals in smaller diameter closer to the front will help kill the resonance.

I played without one for a while. Surprisingly , it resonated less. It was obnoxious though.

I don’t mind exhaust noise, but straight-piped is too much for daily use, and the current setup is too annoying for long trips.

My exhaust does exit past the rear bumper:

Kinja'd!!!

I thought about going up to 3", but the resonance on 3" with the V6s is beyond “tune-able”, so I chose to go up to 2.5" and call it a day. I’ve checked for leaks and there are none.

What’s your system look like?  Might be able to keep what you have if you don’t have a resonator in the middle like one usually does.

It’s full custom. 2.5" off the manifold into a turbo muffler about mid van, split into duals at the rear.

I tried adding a “resonator” in front of the muffler (only place I could) to no avail.

Oh, the muffler is mid van? Hmmm....

Need to move those to the rear.  Use two of them.  With quad exhaust tips.

Switch to single, smaller piping. Thats the V6 right, not the turbo? 2.5 dual is WAY too much exhaust. I have less exhaust than that on a 300hp V8. You aren’t getting enough exhaust gas velocity and thats the drone.

If you’re talking about actual exhaust noise, I dunno... I guess get the cheapest half decent non-performance muffler as they’re geared more for quiet than power.

If you’re talking about drone:

- Pick any muffler you like the sound of.

- Make sure (if possible) that the exhaust doesn’t dump into the ground under the passenger compartment. Straight out the back or side if possible.

- If there’s still drone issues, you want to add a J-pipe/Helmholtz Resonator . Basically you find the resonant frequency that’s causing the drone via the engine RPM/# of cylinders and install a dead-end pipe of 1/4 the wavelength. Sound waves go in, reflect and come out halfway out of phase with the main pipe, cancelling out the drone.

Also fwiw I have a Borla muffler and haven’t had drone issues. That said it is located just behind the cab so there’s that.

Not enough room. Mid van is about the only place to put a muffler, after that there’s not enough room for another muffler.

Took a closer look at that first link and there’s a bit of misinformation in there. The basic calculation is correct but somewhere along the line the guy misunderstood the logic.

The V 6s are extremely restricted by intake and exhaust from factory. The factory 2.25" exhaust chokes out exhaust flow, which is part of the reason they only made 160hp stock . 3" is the ideal exhaust for them when looking for power, but it comes at the cost of drone/resonance. 2.5" seems to be the ideal size, keeping drone minimal, while still netting good power gains. Simple intake/bigger exhaust is good for a 25hp gain at no sacrifice to low end torque.

First time I drive over something they’d be laying on the ground. Side-pipes don’t tend to work well as rock sliders.

Exhaust is funny stuff. Early in the flow, it’s going so fast that it does some strange things, but it’s so hot and so low-density that it’ll wrap around kinks way easier than people think. Then as it cools, it can sort of get more... cloggy, if that’s a word. I think your idea is probably sound if most of the noise is from constructive raisin-ness in the first length of pipe before it splits - shorter that is, the more high pitched noises *should* proliferate, which should then die in the muffler. Maybe.

how are the mounts that hold the exhaust? some of the real firm rubber mounts will transfer vibration easier....... when i had first started hanging my loud exhausts, i would just use old chain from the yard, and hang the exhaust with it. sometimes to get the exhaust to clear the bumps in my street, i would have to put the pipes in a pretty hard bind pulling against them, THAT was enough to make everything in the bed/trunk rattle, resonate under load. . every so often i would lose a chain and have to coat hangar up a pipe. the difference in bind made enough of a difference to help shut up the res......... i also started cutting out strips of used up old radial mud tires, to use to hang the exhaust, and the give of the soft rubber helped to isolate the resonation........

Kinja'd!!! Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness > Die-Trying
11/29/2018 at 12:27

Kinja'd!!!1

They are factory style mounts, so relatively soft rubber.

I think the issue lies in it being a van so the body acts as a big chamber for resonance instead of being isolated like my car.

Funny enough the car has the identical exhaust size and muffler, it is dead silent inside. Both sound about the same from outside, so I’m thinking it’s the body design that’s the issue.

forgot about it having the massive interior “sound-box”

it is also from the age when cars were built to be thrown out fairly often, and build quality is so-so at best? might be time to get out the ratchet set and give everything a light snugging up, and the duct tape to bind anything that wiggles ....... i cant tell you how hateful the camaros and mustangs are from that year range in terms of vibrations. its like having a large speaker, in a large trashcan, full of rocks.........
