1.
It’s a S
ubaru thing
you wouldn’t understand. But fortunately a very rare problem.
2. It’s definitely a Subaru thing, and the reason I’ll never buy another S ubaru.

I don’t really go in for Subarus, but I *get* them. Ergonomics, control layout, general feel of things is much more familiar or right to me than contemporary Toyotas, and not always in ways I can identify. So I don’t mind driving them, but I don’t know I’d ever really want to get one, other than a BRAT or Leone coupe.

Is the rear drive thing a coupling failure?

I think my Impreza is the only Subaru that doesn’t consume oil. I’m 2000 over the oil change, ehhhh, and it is exactly 2mm below the half way mark when cold. Exactly where I put it 7000 miles ago. Nice. Probably the only thing not wrong with the car.

I’ve been happy, so far, with my Impreza coupe. Probably the first and only Subbie I will own.

My guess is the center clutch pack.

According to my dealer you are supposed to check the oil hot, after sitting for 5 minutes on a perfectly level surface. It doesn’t help that the dip stick goes in at a shallow angle too.

I would buy a 2001 or older 2.5RS in a hear beat, wonderful car.

Meanwhile my 305,000 mile toyota engine loses less than 1/2 a quart every 5000 miles and most of that is coming from the oil pump cover gasket.

Count your blessings, I have had the short block replaced in my outback at 35k. I figure they will do it again around 80-90k and then I will buy a different car.

My 2006 mazda running 5w
/20 doesn’t burn a drop in 7,000 miles. I tell the guys at the subaru dealer if they could just put a 2.3 L mazda in my outback I’d be very happy. They don’t get it...

yeah before the gasket went south I wasn’t losing any oil between changes. I really need to get that one sorted...but its kind of a pain.

Oil pumps are usually in the worst place.

I guess the real trouble is the bolts are #2 philips and have a nasty habit of stripping. People sell a retrofit kit with hex head and if I get around to it, that’ s exactly what I’ll do.

I can believe this. I will try this. Everyone I check my Outback at the gas station it always reads super high.

I think your car is older and probably not one of the oil burners, I hope for your sake. Mine is a 2013 and
was guzzling 1qt/1000 miles when they did the short block swap.

I’ve been on SF
less and less, I guess part of it it all the new people coming in with the new models and less
of the SF, SG, even SH discussions..
Part of it though is our Forester has been pretty great. It doesn’t burn oil, has only ever been in for brakes, and does everything we ask it to.. without much fuss.

Mine is 2012. I think we have different engines.

I know two people with 2011 models and they have not had any issues. I think the 2013 is the first year of the newer motor that takes straight 20w oil and that was part of the problem, poorly designed rings was another....

my 700k km Mitsubishi drinks oil like it’s going out of fashion

Your 700k Mitu has 700k on the engine. My subaru had about 60,000 km when the engine was replaced!
