Did you know? CA-spec Toyota MR2s have an extra catalytic converter right before the muffler, Toyota’s band-aid fix for ‘90s emissions standards. Oh, and that’s my third cat, Thunder, by the way.

Mazda did the same thing with ‘99-’00 California-spec Miatas. The problem with those is that the cat in the header would die quickly if the engine started to misfire (bad coil pack typically) and then take the mid-pipe cat with it. Any Cali-NB1 that finds it way out of there typically gets its fragile header replaced with the freer-flowing tubular unit off a NB2 or an aftermarket header. Mazda figured it out with the ‘01+ Miatas but we still got shafted because Europe and Japan got more powerful engines that didn’t have to meet CA standards.
