100% of this will hinge on how cool the Swordfish II is....

a: it will either be good or bad, I’ll watch it regardless

b: it does nothing to harm the original. I will still rewatch that once a year or so

c: mcuh animated content was only made animated to being with because budgets or tech didint exist to make them in live action.

As a huge fan of the series (I was obsessed with it, to the point that I was writing the music for my personal jazz band and my university pep band to play), I naturally have my doubts. It’s easy, as a superfan, to exclaim, “There’s no way they can improve the original! They can only ruin it!”

At the same time, I know that no piece of art is truly perfect; flaws don’t need to be fixed, and I don’t think that’s what the intent of Netflix’s project is. It’s a cash grab, sure, but I think there are good intentions (artistically) as well. It could turn out to be decent, watchable...a gateway for people who aren’t familiar with the original to try the original. It could also be an unmitigated disaster.

So at the end of the day, I reconcile everything with the truth that whether or not a live-action remake happens, or whether or not said adaptation is great or terrible...none of those things will change my love for the original work of art. None of those things will ALTER the original work of art (I can’t see Watanabe pulling a Disney-esque “t his is the new canon and all the old canon was never canon” a la Star Wars) in such a way that will modify it quality at all. So, if the live-action is a great new chapter...then great! If it’s a mediocre addition to existing canon (Bubblegum Crash, the Cowboy Bebop manga, the Gunsmith Cats OVAs), then as a fan, I can easily ignore it, and go about my existence without being outraged.

I think if more fans approached their fandom like this, there would be less outrage . But then, every fandom BBS and forum wouldn’t have a discussion section anymore, and they’d all just do nothing but trade memes and pornographic fanfiction.

I think this is a lot easier to adapt that anything from DB. While sci-fi, its not supernatural. A show like DB pretty much needs to be animated thanks to the various energy weapons and aliens, but Cowboy Bebop doesn’t have any of that.

but part of the appeal of both shows was the original animation style, and the a rt of it. My biggest problem with DBsuper is the half assed animation.

I really hope that when the television industry implodes, it takes bad live-action anime remakes with it somehow. (I know this is a streaming service that’s doing the good work of killing TV once and for all , but...I can wish, can’t I?)
