My MR2's stock muffler is strictly a bolt-on part, and I’d like to replace it with something lighter for autocross. Stock one w eighs 35-75  lbs, depending on which 2003 Toyota forum post you read.

This MagnaFlow universal muffler seems like a good fit, but I’m not sure what kind of parts I’d need to fit it on the car securely and without leaks.

Anyone here have experience with exhaust work? Is this DIY-able or should I find a shop to figure out a good setup?

My initial idea too, thinking “labor can’t be that complicated; won’t cost much more than just the parts.”

Then I thought, “maybe I should do it myself if it’s that easy.”

The MagnaFlow unit is $150 but I need some kind of intermediate piping to connect it to the resonator/silencer section.

it should just be a couple of bolts to remove to take off the old one and then put the new one back on, you’ll probably want a new gasket and might want someone else to help removing the exhaust hangars as they are on either corner of the car at the back and can be a bit of a pain to remove

Check aftermarket exhaust available, then listen to the best recordings of it to see which note(s) you like best. Whenever you buy it, make sure to get a new gasket or keep the original one if it’s not cracked.

Edit: spray the rubber exhaust hangers with WD-40 so they’ll slip right off the muffler.

That’s if he buys a bolt on ‘cat back’ type. It looks like he is looking at putting a universal muffler on - as in

The Magnaflow unit pictured doesn’t have a section to bolt onto the stock piping (it’s a universal-fit muffler).

Pictured is the huge stock muffler (found on the internet, mine’s still on the car), it bolts up to the resonator(?) at the end of the curved piping. I think I would need some kind of intermediate pipe to connect to the Magnaflow muffler?

I didn’t bother checking out what the magnaflow looks like but having done so it wont be a straight forwards job, it will need more work than it’s probably worth, your better option would be to get one made for the car so it’s just a bolt on

All the MR2-specific aftermarket cat-back systems cost $500+, and a lot of them won’t even ship to California. Not sure exactly why, everything south of the cats is supposed to be fair game tuning-wise :/

Having a specific sound isn’t really a huge priority; I just want the lightest weight setup that won’t exceed autocross noise limits. 91 db @ 50'.

Mmm yeah, good point. Even with labor that might be cheaper than a cat-back system.

Because CARB who also wants fucking dress-up parts to have an EO . If it’s not got an EO, the shipment can be seized and they can be fined a fuckload of money. Even if the part is clearly labeled as not legal in CA or off-road use only.

Find a good exhaust shop over the border that can fabricate a complete header-back system using quality catalytic converter cores (200 cell metallic.) Then you don’t have to deal with CARB’s bullshit without being a needlessly polluting asshole.

Ah, then going with the Magnaflow route might be your best bet if you want to ditch weight, meet sound, and keep it budget friendly.  I’m not sure what labor would cost to weld up a nice muffler, especially for California...

I changed the exhaust (from the cat back ) on the Mini by myself. Give me about 20 minutes, I’ll post pretty (not ) pics
