Kinja'd!!!

This is my grandfather’s watch. He immigrated here from Poland. He came here in the Ellis island era, but not through the island itself. Taught himself English, got a job at the assembly plant in Tarrytown, NY. Raised a family. Retired from GM with a pension and a watch. My mom got employee pricing on GM cars. Maybe still does.

But I have zero interest in a Chevy. None. Thought wouldn’t occur to me. My parents were half GM, half Subaru. Then the GM products started getting shittier and shittier. An Oldsmobile intrigue with a crap transmission. A Sunfire for my sister. An incredibly crappy Grand am. Before those a thoroughly mediocre regal. The Grand am was it. No more GM products for my parents. My sister has a traverse. Our pilot is light years better.

I grew up an enthusiast, and they cut the Camaro and trans am. By all rights I should be die hard GM. But when my wife was looking at rentals and asked “Malibu?” my initial reaction is “yuk”. I kn ow that’s unfair. I know they are much better. But they have so much negative emotional equity with my generation, whose parents d ealt with such crap offerings. If t hey can’t win me over, what chance did they ever have?

Do we owe anything to the companies that gave money to our ancestors to exist, or do they owe our ancestors for their success?

I wonder about that a lot of  the time...

God question, and I don’t know. I do know they treated him a lot better than they would someone in the same job now.

Sometimes you have to let the past die or else you’ll never change.

Am I telling you that you should change? Not necessarily. But you sound like a man who wants to give them a chance deep down because your parents did. It sounds like your father worked for them between the golden years and the downturn post-CAFE. It’s understandable that your thoughts may be negative for them for the same reasons that my thoughts are generally positive for GM (dad and mom both owned Chevrolet pickups and both were flawless workhorses, I owned a Cadillac for a first car and loved it to death).

If you ever want to consider giving them a chance, try your best to shed a light on them with new eyes and see where it goes. If you don’t, that’s fine.

I guess it depends on how they were treated.

Growing up around drag racing, it was pretty much Chevy and nothing else. I still like fast Chevys, but wouldn’t consider anything off their lot. The only GM product I might buy would be a GMC truck. I stay away from domestics, except for a new Focus in 2012, completely . I only bought the Focus as a work vehicle, and did  125,000 miles in two years. I am a Honda/Subaru guy for the most part.

“My sister has a traverse. Our pilot is light years better.”

I drove a 2018 Traverse and a 2018 Pilot and found the traverse to be significantly better.

Our ancestors existed for 200k years before any companies showed up. They didn’t need them in order to exist and neither do we. Despite what the corporate zombies say, companies  owe they’re existence to people, not the other way around.

I do tend to see it that way

Agreed. I hate them. We’ve several of their vehicle over the years and I despise the poor interior quality. I mean, interior door handles should NEVER break under normal use. It’s an unacceptable safety hazard and yet every GM product we’ve ever had other than the 83 suburban had broken interior door handles. Disgusting.

I don’t feel you owe them anything. However, it sounds to me like you have a negative impression and aren’t judging the products on their merits. Objectively, they have both good and bad vehicles, same as any manufacturer.

You’re right, and that’s my point. I k ow they make decent stuff. But if even I can’t overcome my negativity towards them, and I should be a huge Chevy fan, then that speaks to how much trouble they could be in.

What I like about this string is that it illustrates how difficult it is to regain a reputation for quality once it is lost. GM/Ford/Chrysler all lost their reputation of quality due to their cost cutting and inability to keep step with the imports from the 1980's on.

Now I do believe GM cars are demonstrably better, much to the credit of Bob Lutz. A Malibu may be as good as an Accord technically, but do I want to bet $35k on it and accept the depreciation? Probably not.

It’s probably better that they shave down their portfolio as without a reputation, all they can do is compete on price. Ps. It’s time for another Mawk ad mocking their campaign....

And it's not just a generation, but that generations kids now who won't go near them

Yep, you think a manufacturer has turned the corner and then you see something like this..... https://oppositelock.kinja.com/fiesta-st-out-of-warranty-transmission-replacement-1830740945

I think a big factor against the big three is they live off of lease and fleet sales which has debilitating effect on the premium that customers pay. If customers won’t pay, you need to lessen the quality. If you lessen the quality, you get stuck with a less than stellar reputation and price.

Most people I know have Toyota’s, Honda’s and Subaru’s and wouldn’t dream of buying anything else. They buy at MSRP and hold their cars 6 to 15 years. And they have virtually no issues. It’s hard to get those customers back.

But there is a silver lining which is you can buy used GM cars for cheap and they are pretty decent cars. I have an ‘08 Chevy Uplander that I use to tow my race car with and it has been very good. I paid 1/2 the price of an equivalent used Honda Odyssey when I bought it.

I said to someone else, it's not only hard to get those customers back, but those customers kids that are now buying family cars. It goes generations deep sometimes
