edit: ugh, similar story to mine. I always pulled the ECU, but they broke into his other car to take it’s ECU to drive away the Integra. super shady, someone knew a lot of details.

Kinja'd!!!

I used to remove my ECU, but I also had a custom wiring harness between the car and the ECU so you couldn’t just use a different ECU.

Its crazy how common it is. I know 5 or 6 people that have had late 90s-early 2000s civics stolen in the last 2 years. Mostly out of their own driveways.

One of my coworkers bought a pre-stolen one from an auction last year and that is the only one that is safe. The ignition is all ripped apart and the doors don’t lock right. He’s seen people looking into it in parking lots and just keep going, most likely they think it s already stolen.

wow that sucks. its also why i usually take pics near a public park, or empty parking lot when I post cars for sale. You never want to tell people where the car is go ing to be parked.

I love 90s Hondas, but I will never own one because I live in a shiftier area and have to street park. Surely my Golf will never suffer the same fate!

Geez.  Note to self - should you ever own an old Honda, install multiple kill switches.

Answer the ad and meet up at a Dunkin Donuts, and bring an undercover cop with you

even then...
the colorado stolen cars page I follow has three main things

1: ford 250 or similar pickups

2: subaru impreza
3: honda/acuras

the trucks are often found, dumped. the suspicion is that the trucks are being used to steal the cars. I know my old civic was towed to the end of the new owner’s street before they either loaded it up or managed to get it started.

I wanted to buy my “childhood car”, a 1995 Integra GS-R (I’m 44 by the way).

However, I realized I will always be worried about it getting stolen. My buddy, his Integra was stolen out of his garage, they even moved another car out of the way without damaging it to get to the Integra.

Owing an older “sporty” Honda product, having it stolen is a very big worry.

My first car was a ‘98 sedan that had been stolen before. Steering column was all bent and the steering lock didn’t work. Ignition still worked fine. I got pulled over SO MANY TIMES in that car by cops who suspected it was stolen.

You never have to worry about that when owning a Lancia. They only stole my license plates. Seriously. I’ve owned that car barely a week.

Why are they so desirable? Drift cars? Racers? Parts?

the GSR had the most powerful B series engine released in the US (aside from the super rare Type R), and it will happily plug into the engine bay of basically any civic or integra from 88-2002.

AND the vin plate is ONLY on the trans, and ONLY if its a US motor. so remove the VIN plate from the trans, and say it was a JDM import, there’s no way to know the motor is stolen.

I would think so.
but if the theives have time, the seats bolt directly into a 92-95 civic, or with a swapped rails into a 96-00 civic, the dash can fit a 92-95 civic, the rear disc brakes (to replace drums) will fit 92-96 civics, wheels will fit pretty much any 4x100 honda, and of course any of the parts will fit the same gen Integra.
so lots of parts worth lots of money that are very difficult to trace once stolen.

The RSX is just as awesome as the Integra but actually has some semblance of  theft deterrent shit.

Suddenly slightly more nervous about my suddenly running Civic.  That said, I think 5th and 6th generation Hondas are the primary targets.

It’s like they say. Owning an Integra is like a dream. You wake up and it’s gone.

Years ago my 94 Accord was stolen twice. Once was perhaps an initiation, seven cars were taken a couple blocks away and ditched.

Ca nt you still pick up a cheap sms based tracker? I i ncognito wired it in with a pre-paid sim card for a Corrado a long long  time ago.  I think it cost me 25 bucks and 3 weeks shipping from china.

I traded my POS rusty unregistered, probably previously stolen GSR for a nice running Accord EX, which i sold a year later for 1300 bucks. So

the power-train was ripped out and put into a Civic so yes. I traded a nightmare GSR for a nice daily driver Accord, worth at least 1600 bucks.
