per the live reveal (via channels that livestreamed it)
7650 lbs towing
1600 lbs payload
Rubicon has “DANA 44 front and rear with 4.10 gears” no word on if they are different than the standard rubi axles
Fox shocks
Off road calibration unique to the gladiator that allows front sway bar unlock with rear axle locked at the same time (no word on if you need to be in 4 wheel drive)
removable bluetooth noise polluter (sigh)
it looks CRAZY long
Pretty shallow bed, maybe 24-30 inches deep
Pretty much nothing you didn’t already get from David’s FP piece.
UPDATE: I’m pretty sure there is no disconnecting rear sway bar on these. all the material simply references a front. I wonder if they couldn’t do it and keep their payload rating or something. CONFIRMED. Only a front disconnect, not front and rear.
it comes with 4 top options
Body colored 3 piece hardtop
Black 3 piece hardtop
Sunrider softop
“premium” sunrider softtop

Yes, you can still get the gladiator with a 6 speed manual.
Bed is steel, tailgate is aluminum
standard skids include oil sump, transmission and gas tank. Rubi package adds an additional unspecified ski and rock rails for the mid body and rear.

I t’ s a removable bluetooth speaker behind the rear seats. Just in case you can’t ruin your camp neighbors solitude with the internal speakers alone .

It looks really awkward from that view.

To me, this just looks like a Jeep version of the Explorer Sport T rac

it really is. The proportions do NOT scale well.

it looks really awkward from most views. The live reveal had a bunch of them driving up onto the stage and they don’t look any better in motion than they do in pics. Very weirdly proportioned.

If the roof doesn’t come off and snap on as a tonneau, they missed a huge feature opportunity.

We went over that in the FP thread. That’s not ugly. THIS is ugly.
Or this.
Or this.
The common thread ? AMC. Ugh.

The roof and doors come off and the windshield folds down. Both very cool and very...concerning

I like it, trucks like this will look awkward.

Yup. I have Never seriously thought about buying a Wrangler, because as cool as they maybe, they have less cargo room than your average 90's hatchback.
this changes things.

IT looks it too and the breakover angle tells the same tale. when the rubicon came out on stage they had it climb up some rocks and I kept waiting for it to try out the standard rock sliders. These things are going to be beached whales on a lot of southern utah trails like Lockhart.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:16 |

I’d seriously consider one down the line...my next vehicle though will be a sedan. By next purchase a fter that though my ‘93 F150 will probably be pretty beat and tired
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:18 |
|
they had better damn well try.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:19 |
|
that was fast. Very cool. Though I feel like they missed an opportunity to take it all the way up to the front doors since there doesn’t have to be a roof or doors. Then again...bed flex.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:20 |
|
I’ll tell you, those...37? inch tires sure help a lot with the proportions. It’ s about the only way you’re going to get a decent breakover angle as well.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:20 |

It is highly likely this will replace my F150. What are your opinions on buying first year production run? Good or wait until they work the bugs out of the first grouping? It’s not like it’s a completely new model. It shares a lot with the current platform.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:22 |

The thing with Jeep is that its not that they can’t make a good Jeep, its that they aren’t good at making a Jeep right the first time. The JK had teething issues, the JL is obviously got them (and the less we say about the WK I and II the better with their first runs) ...with the Gladiator it could be they’ve sorted all the common JL bugs out, or they could have a fresh new batch. I would wait personally, if for nothing else than to allows the markups to die down.

I will admit, it is an attractive package (if not actually that a ttractive). Definitely the “Swiss Army knife” of vehicles. I just can’t imagine spending how much they’re going to ask for one...
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:24 |

This is certainly going to be Jeep asking people to put their money where their mouth has been. “Diesel Wrangler pickup!”
here you are kind patron, that will be $63,599 plus destination.
“oh, I...um...let me get back to you.”

We’ll have to see IDK if my career will get me to a place in the next 2-3 years where a 40,000 dollar vehicle seems doable .
I have a firm rule that i wont buying into a car payment unless its actually 100/month sell than i can afford. Like right now I could have a 350/month payment but instead im at 240 because that’ s more comfortable, should things go south . Plus I can still pay 350 occasionally and pay the car o ff 3 years instead of 4.
My point is I think this could be a good fun/useful arounder and i’d love to have one, but at this time new pickup prices make me want to curl up an d ie. And for better or worse I’m sure the used prices on these in 4-5 years will just as stupid, if not worse then their MSRP.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:27 |

Haha! The Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon starts just over $40k; I’d assume this will be ~$5k more across the trim levels?
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:30 |

we’ll see. My guess is that a loaded Gladiator rubi with the gas engine will run up against 60k
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:31 |

Crazy. That’s before or after dealer markup?
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:32 |

Buying a Jeep you need to bu y something 5 years or older or new...the almost new/just off lease ones are almost as much as a new one and if you can get that 0% loan from the manufacturer it ends up being cheaper.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:32 |

before. don’t forget Jeep sells a JLU “moab” edition already for 53 grand. and thats just a sahara with mud terrains.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:35 |

Honestly, I don’t blame Jeep (or Porsche, or...) - if morons are willing to pay for ridiculous options or trim levels, make that money.

Rubicon - Comes with all the important off road hardware I’ll eventually and slowly replace with aftermarket.

I’m glad they left enough room for a 35” spare under there.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:53 |

well you want the rock trac transfer case, the uprated axles and the swaybar disconnects. Which if you own it long enough and have “the condition” bad enough all gets replaced eventually, even if you didn’t plan to originally.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:54 |
|
Definitely looking out for the enthusiast.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:55 |

right, but what I’m saying is that they missed a clever opportunity to use the roof as a tonneau if desired.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:56 |

ahh. interdasting. I think the shapes aren’t right though, even with the hilarious tumblehome on this truck the bed will still be quite a bit wider.

![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:21 |

It’s a six speed manual truck.
I know quite a lot of people who will be instantly sold on this.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:22 |
|
That’s only a few inches shy of full size pickups. I presume they pushed it out for approach/departure angles.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:22 |
|
Boy there is a weird thing happening with the rear door, there is a gap behind the door with the roof off and there is a sharp hard hadge right at the passenger shoulder that could be painful off road.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:24 |
|
Well now they have 3 (soon to be 2...bye frontier) trucks to choose from.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:24 |
|
Breakover be damned!
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:27 |
|
RIP the Frontier. Nissan was stupid about how they handled their manuals. You could get the I4 with a manual in the single cab, but not the V6. If you went to the quad cab, then you could get the V6 with a manual. Silly stuff.
Frontier is basically the last gasp of the “compact” trucks I grew up with.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:28 |
|
Pretty much. A stout set of rock rails will be a requirement.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:29 |

Yup, people complain about the frontier, but its solid. My brother just bought a pro4x (used) and Im excited to help him get it muddy.

I also couldn’t figure out why he said “ow” but I slowed it down and you can see hit hitting is forearm on the door catch. Ow is right. Hopefully there are better ways to get it
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:31 |
|
Hopefully manual Hellkitty Gladiator!!!! :)
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:36 |

At 218” overall length, it’s 10” longer than my DCSB, but with the same bed. What makes that interesting to me is that it appears they kept the cab space intact. On the test drive of the JLUR, my son had much more rear seat room in that than in the Taco.
Comparing the Gladiator to the JLU, legroom does indeed match, 38.3”. That extra room over the Taco makes it intriguing to me.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:40 |
|
Awesome thanks!
Yeah the picture and videos clearly show a much larger cab which for many people will be welcome, though I think it makes less off road capable and substantially so...which is an odd choice for the Jeep brand. Frankly I think they just were stuck with the JLU dimensions and are (rightly) downplaying the breakover compromise of such and playing up the leg room and cab space thing. I think if it was a clean sheet design they probably wouldn’t have been so generous to the to cab dimensions.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:40 |
|
If I can find a Frontier or Xterra with a manual, I’ll probably be all over it. I’ve always been kind of a sucker for the Xterra in the first place, but a Frontier would be adequate, especially if I can find one that’s a single cab (though the Frontier is one of the few trucks I like in crew cab form.)
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:41 |
|
Ha - I heard the “ow”, but didn’t think anything of it.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:44 |
|
They clearly valued rear legroom and departure angle over breakover.
Can you imagine the turning radius?!
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:46 |
|
Pretty sure he said the rock rails are standard, but that might just be a Rubicon feature.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:46 |
|
This is why I backcountry hike
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:49 |
|
Pretty shallow bed, maybe 24-30 i nches deep
I’m confused on this one. 24-30 inches from floor to top of the rails would be a deep, deep bed, like a dump bed or stake body, which it clearly isn’t. My Ram is 18 inches. Length also looks to be over double that, so I don’t think you’re referring to that either. Anyway, it’s about time Jeep.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:49 |
|
Agreed there. The door design is a perfect visual to show that they merely kept the existing cab design intact. A recent road trip in the Taco was fine, but it was a little tight in the backseat with my son and a bunch of crap back there. The more generous cabin of the Jeep is a benefit for me.
The Gladiator could be a good compromise of more cabin space, and the smaller foot print (than a full size). It’ll still fit in my garage, and manage the soft roading that I do now.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:59 |

In case the Mark Allen video hasn’t been posted yet:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The lack of the normal rear Wrangler windows makes that top so insanely easy. I think I’m fully onboard with a 2020 purchase if only I can rescue my finances between now and then.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 16:01 |
|
Well, OEM rock rails are typically quite different than aftermarket. I don’t know if i’ve ever seen an OEM not be body mounted, whereas pretty much all aftermarket are frame mounted.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 16:05 |
|
I read recently a piece where someone strongly advocated body-mounted rails, because if you hit something hard enough that you risk serious damage, you really want to damage the body, not the frame.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 16:08 |
|
That sound off. If i hit something that hard, I want to damage the rail, not the frame or body. Out of the two, the frame can take a significantly harder hit. If you hit a body-mounted rail hard enough, you could deform the body, or worst case scenario, break a body mount. The goal is to keep that force completely away from the sheet metal.

what , like you think you are safe from blutooth speakers there?
![]() 11/28/2018 at 16:32 |

So far I have been, yes. I tend to dispersed camp whenever possible so there’s usually nobody camping within a quarter mile, let alone earshot.

I went backpacking last summer in the unitas and was following a group of teens with a blue tooth speaking clipped to one of their backpacks blasting music the whole way. I eventually told them that most people come out to enjoy nature, if they want to bring their music into nature with them they need to keep it to themselves.
/curmudgeon out!
![]() 11/28/2018 at 16:53 |
|
Wow, that is incredibly disrespectful of them. I’ve never run into anything like that in the backcountry. I’ve hardly ever run into teenagers, and I’ve been out in Rainier, t he Olympic rainforest, the Trinity Alps, the North Cascades, the Gifford-Pinchot, and Yosemite. Maybe I’m just lucky.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 16:56 |

its pretty common in Utah. I don’t speak up when the hike is a little 3 miler to the lake but this was a 12 mile hike into the backcountry. Im a little sensitive about this particular topic. WHY DO YOU THINK I WANT TO HEAR YOUR MUSIC! if you want to, wear headphones. its not like this group was talking to each other anyway.

That’s what I meant by modify...the people who seriously modify and replace axles, swaybars (we don’t need no stinkin’ sway bars), etc.
Also, didn’t know about the transfer case difference...different ratios or just more robust?
