Someone I know announced the purchase of a Honda Clarity on Facebook. Until that moment I was not aware of this car as a plug-in hybrid, I may have heard about it as a fuel cell vehicle. What is the Oppo hot take?
Frankly, it looks oddly proportioned from the side view, but not horrible from other angles. No clue on whether it is a good value or better than the competition (would that be the Prius?) or anything else about it.

It’s a good Honda
EDIT: but not in EV trim. 143 km/89 miles range is pitiful

The Clarity comes in PHEV, electric (with lame-ass 89 mile range) , and fuel cell versions. The PHEV is the most common. In theory it would be a competitor for the Prius Prime, except it’s huge. Basically a bigger, uglier Accord.

it WAS a fuel cell vehicle, then honda realized it wasnt leasing outside of cali and made it a plug in hybrid.
that is SHIT. small battery, but the gas motor can ABRELY (and I do mean BARELY) pull its fat-ass up a hill. electroic motor is like 70% of the main drive force.

It’s ugly and over-sculpted , like all the new Hondas.

I actually kinda dig the looks. It’s like if a Civic and a VW XL1 had a baby.

But... the electric motor is 100% of the main drive force. It’s a PHEV.

Looks like it has “tear” tattoos or makeup from the outer corner of the eye. Cheesy.

There’s a proper way to execute covered rear wheels.
Hint: it’s not the Clarity.

just because its a PHEV doesnt mean the motor doesnt help. In
my
A3 E-tron (also a PHEV)
the honda has 103HP motor in the PHEV. and its USELESS

It’s actually a rather handsome vehicle relative to the rest of Honda’s current lineup. Which is to say it’s hideous, but less so than the Civic and definitely than its competition (Mirai Bolt Prius ).

It’s a better car as a PHEV compared to the other versions but I think it’s sm ugly.

Sounds like a soccer team for recovering addicts or something.

It’s... not bad. It looks like the FUTURE CAR from 1982. Which, honestly, is what Honda has always done. I see a few every day. Honda’s lineup isn’t pretty, these days, but they’re pretty good.

I’d consider the plug-in in a color that masks the face better, like black

Yeah, that would help, but you still have the weird overhangs both in the front and rear. Can’t find a color to mask that.

I’m also not horrified by it like most, it’s better than most hybrid/plug- ins

It is hideous but perhaps a wind tunnel caused it. If it was cheap to drive and just a commuter I don't really care what it looks like as long as I can keep my three older cars.

A friend of mine has one I’ve spent considerable time in it. Has some weird quirks, overall unremarkable. Funny looking if nothing else. It’s bigger than the pictures suggest, also weighs more than my crown vic.

According to my friend who has one (who is also an engineer and thus has the
need to know
for this sort of thing) it’s got a single gear which at highway speeds can couple the engine to the driveline, otherwise the engine is solely a generator for the electric.

Thanks for the clarification. I did like an hour of googling trying to figure out if the engine is mechanically decoupled from the wheels or not and couldn’t find anything. That’s really, really lame.
