Just set up an appointment to get my 996 worked on and the first opening at my preferred shop isn’t for two weeks(!). I’m taking that as a good sign.

What’s it going in for?

I had to schedule a MONTH out with my local FORD dealer. My local respected independent mechanic is booking into late January 2019. These are *NOT* specialty shops...

What’ s wrong with it?

We bought our new-to-us Jaguar two weekends ago and called our inde mechanic that following Monday. Our appointment is on December 12th...couldn’t see the car for a month.
When the 600 needs anything, I have to schedule about 10 days in advance and drop off the night before.
Humor the genius, for they do deserve it.

Oddly, I think they could have as much work as they want to, so it’s probably a way to keep them from constantly working 70 hour weeks.

lol yeah.. theres a point
i think theres laws against that

Starter/alternator battery cable needs replacing as there is a constant drain in the system and it doesn’t like hot starting. Bought the cable to do it myself and got started, but my wife is 8 months pregnant and housework has taken precedence over car work. The kid *must* come home from the hospital in the 911, so better to just get it done.
I also haven’t had anyone local to me take a look at it since I had the PPI done when I bought it in March, so I figured it was a good time to get an annual check-up and figure out how long I have until I have to cut a check for a 5-figure engine rebuild/

The looks of the 996 had really grown on me over the years; however, once I drove one, I was able to forget about them. Really is a fantastic car to drive.

A friend of mine who was the head mechanic at one of the well-regarded indy Euro shops in town for 15 years just opened his own place a year ago and is killing it. So happy for him.

I had capitulated on the looks by the time I started looking to buy one, but yeah, about 5 minutes behind the wheel and whatever misgivings I had were forgotten about.
I’ll still contend that there are plenty of 996 trims which look a lot better than some other ones. The 996.1s can look good with the right options and colors, but the early headlights are pretty not great and the interiors are bad . The 996.2s are generally much better looking, and the interior is a huge improvement over the .1, but it seems a lot of .2s were purchased with the AeroKit as an option which I don’t think looks great at all. Turbos and C4Ss and 40th Anniversary cars are pretty widely accepted as decent looking cars these days.

One thing I’ve noticed in trying to find the right “home” for my car (jesus, that sounds pretentious) is that the work certainly follows the mechanics in this realm. There’s actually a guy here in Dallas that works for one of the suburban Porsche dealerships who is the guy to go to for track-day/track-car setups . Out of an OEM Porsche shop. Dunno why, but that is WILD to me. Seems like he just gets to do what he wants because the customers are beating down the door to get him working on their cars, even at OEM shop pricing.

You’re in the Texas/Oklahoma region, right? What’s the name of your buddy’s shop? Glad to hear he’s killing it!

For sure - the best mechanics are always drowning in work.

You sir have a good perspective.
When I free lanced I had people call and I would tell them I’m a few weeks out and they would say “need it now, or never.” Good things take some time, and if it is a service then you really want someone who is constantly doing the work you are planning on taking them.

I work in a client-service role in finance on projects that are almost always hugely time sensitive , and unfortunately our answer is almost always “yes” when someone asks for it now or never, so I very much appreciate and have a lot of respect for someone who is simply willing to say “can’t do it right now”.
