I travel a lot. Right now, I am in Reno, a city I know not at all. I took a couple of cab rides yesterday evening, the first time I took taxis in a long time after using rideshare exclusively for about 3 years. Here are my thoughts:

1. The taxi drivers were unfriendly, except one guy who chatted pleasantly with me at the end of the evening. Every Uber/Lyft driver I have used has been friendly, and willing to answer questions about the town.

2. The taxis were dirty. I mean, gross. Yuck. Never had that with an Uber/Lyft. I had one that smelled like weed once, but like, hey, whatever man. These taxis were nasty inside.

3. Twice the credit card machine in the cab failed. ‘Nuff said.

4. Taxis are much more expensive. Fuck that noise.

We could have a lot of discussion over the pros and cons of the independent contractor model, but when it comes to customer experience, taxis lose in a big way. Taxi industry, you done been out-competed.

Reno has fun local news. This old anchor makes bitter commentary on the stories and finishes with “I’m done.”

He rules.

JOHN POTTER IS HIS NAME AND HE IS THE GREATEST NEWSMAN IN HISTORY!

I'm done.

I have no problem with the idea of services like Uber and Lyft.   I just wish the companies running them weren’t such enormous bags of dicks.

The last time I took a taxi, the dude got lost and it costs me more money. Fuck that noise. It was something like $3, so it wasn’t a big enough deal for me to say anything. It’s not the money, it’s the principle.

Reno is my least favorite part about traveling to Tahoe. That said, taxis are the actual worst although I have had some sketchy situations in ubers also. I ncluding a driver who was almost definitely chasing the dragon before he picked me up. He S tarted the convo straight off with “I’ve been sober for xyz months.” Then preceded to nod out a few times while he was driving.

That old guy is still on the air awesome it’s been years since I’ve been to Reno. Oh and they named their court house after Judge Mills B Lane.

Lyft and Uber are a great example of how free market capitalism and competitive markets are great for consumers. We end  up with a better service for less cost.

I’ve never taken an Uber or Lyft but the taxis here in my city are tightly monitored.

The taxis drivers while not always being nice and friendly (95% of them are) have clean well maintained cars. One taxi driver was given a warning for driving on a spare steel wheel with no wheel trim after he got a flat on his alloy wheel.

Taxi drivers have an allowance to keep their vehicles clean and even in the winter months if the cars are not clean on the inside and not cleaned every day they will get a fine from the council.

If there are several routes they will ask which you prefer.

You get a text me ssage and an automated phone call when they are a minute away.

When making a booking some will text you the time and location of the pickup and the licence plate of the car and a short description so you know what car to look for.

When you phone for a taxi they ask your name so when you phone again, they greet you when they answer with ‘ Hello taxis, where are you wanting to go to today Sven?’.

Has Uber turned a profit yet?

My last taxi ride was $256 . It was rush hour . Called taxi. Driver showed up 10 minutes late . Told him my flight leaves in 60 minutes and I need to be at the airport in 20. $100 tip if I made it there in time. I clicked start on my stop watch. What happened next was the most terrifying, exhilarating, and entertaining trip off my life. Honestly I think the cab got air, more than once. Went 22 miles through rush hour traffic in 11 minutes. He dropped me off, I tipped him an extra $100. When he left   I walked into the airport and scheduled an Uber back home. I didn’t need the taxi. I was just curious if he would do it. And yes, it was definitely worth it :D btw the cab was a prius with the cluster lit up like a christmas tree and a really interesting sound from the brakes.

In Asia quite a few taxi drivers are stuck on Formula 1 mode permanently, no tip needed.
