This is my new place of work

Kinja'd!!!

Today I got to wake up a 4:30 to get to work for 7am for a safety course and we boarded a school bus and drove into the pit. The 240 tonne dumper trucks are huge. The tires seem higher than the buses roof. We drove to the lower level we see in this pic. But the hole is much deeper now.

I work in the one of the white buildings in the background. We are a IT team of 11 at the moment and so far (after 2 days ) my coworkers and bosses seem really cool. I think I landed in a good team. Days are long since I got to get up early. Tomorrow I start a 8am so must get up at 5:30 and leave at 6:30.

Neat! Are you working strictly in user support or do you work with the local navigation/mapping/tracking systems too?

Wow, we have a lot of mining and  quarries but I’ve never seen a town so adjacent to one. It’s almost like a sci fi movie set.

No trucks or gps yet.

User support and maintenance of the infrastructure.

I saw a documentary on open pit mines. They briefly discussed the tracking systems and left me wanting more.

They, or I should say we moved part of the town. This site is 4 abandoned underground mines from the 30s to the 80s when the last one closed. Basically killed the city. Then 10 years ago they started moving houses.

In 2019 we are moving the part of the highway you see in the pic to expand the pit.

I know a lot about   how and why they can be so precise when relying on GPS . I’m really more interested in the back-end configuration.
