I really want this truck to be in good shape, but she’s throwing curve balls at me. I just had an oil change and tire rot ation, and they told me my sway bar link is broken on drivers side.
Part # 48820-34020 - my local stealership wants $158 and they have it in stock. I get can it online for $90 or so . Or, I can get Moog link on RockAuto for $21, or Mevotech for $24. I was about to shop on RockAuto for rear Bilstein shocks anyway, so I figured maybe I can just buy it all together, and with that low Moog price, I can just buy both ends and replace the passenger side as well.
Anyway, I know nothing of these aftermarket brands. Are they any good, considering the cost is 1/7th of OEM? Or should I bite the bullet and spend $200 on OEM parts?

I’ve always had a good experience with Moog parts

Moog links are well worth it. They are beefier than OEM, have a better fastener setup , and have zerk fittings for regreasing. Doing both sides is a good idea.

Thanks for the info! I am leaning towards Moog for both sides, and 2x Bilstein 5100's for the rear. Nice $200 order...and another day of wrenching.

Moog Problem Solver grade parts se em to be pretty good (just as long as they remember to put threads where threads are supposed to be ). And I hear very good things about Mevotech, especially their TTX /“Terrain Tough” line of parts. (If you can’t get TTX, their “Supreme” grade parts appear to be similar to most brands’ “professional grade” offerings.

Moog has been hit and miss lately. could be great, could be crap.

I’d be a little cautious about non-oem parts. Moog is fine as long as the build quality is good.

Moog is usually a good brand. In the case of fixing Fords, their quality is often superior to the OEM Ford part.

They have Mevotech S upreme for a few bucks more than Moog Problem Solver. Is one better than the other?

Great, I just wanted to make sure they weren’t junk at that price point.

Good to know! I’d love OEM, but I’ve spent a lot on this truck lately and am beginning to budget a bit more.

I think I’ll roll the dice at 1/5th of the cost of cheapest OEM part. They should be easy to replace later if needed be, and it’s not a critical part.

I’m always cautious with non-OEM as I don’t know much about them. I figured plenty of people here wrench a lot more than I do and they’d know if they were crap or no.

Yeah, no problem with their end links. Have put them on multiple cars.
I just put Mevotech control arms on my car too, but don’t have enough experience with them to judge one way or the other.

I’ve always had good luck with Rockauto parts. More than one of the local mechanics have been impressed with the price for the quality. Even have heard (unconfirmed) that some of the parts you buy at Lordco are ordered from rockauto

Dunno.
FWIW, it’s typica lly a good sign when they’re considerate enough to include an angled grease fitting instead of throwing a cheap straight one in the box, so whichever picture you shared above is probably a good choice.

Just spent $228 on their website - new rear shocks (Bilstein 5100), new sway bar links from Moog, new rear wheel stud (lost 1 out of 6 on one wheel), and some touch-up paint (some rust under the grill).

That is the Moog one and the is the one I ordered, times two. I hope they work well, thanks!

Agreed, I have had bad luck with two moog tie rod ends recently. Beck/Arnley was even worse. I only do OEM for suspension now. It lasted 15 years the first time.

I use Moog suspension bushings for my custom made motor mounts in my smarts. They last significantly longer than the OEM motor mounts. In fact, my Moog-enhanced motor mount has surpassed over 2x the mileage a factory motor mount could survive.
As for their use as suspension components? I’ve heard both good and bad about them.

Proforged parts are pretty good. Probably the best ones listed on Rock Auto for your Tundra.
Other good brands are Deeza and Sankei. You can get the
Sankei one on eBay for $47

Some tie rod ends seem to be crap by design. Moog has always been good to me, but if the original design is weak, I don’t know what they can do about it...

I think that is true of many brands nowadays. Dorman, for one: used to be good and now, mediocre or worse. AC Delco, Fel-Pro and Denso are the only brands I have much confidence in any more.

When I rebuilt the suspension on my 01 Tundra, I went with Moog parts combined with Bilstein 5100s . Make sure to order replacement “top hats” or suspension mounts for the Bilsteins assuming you are doing the fronts. KYB was the recommended manufacturer for the suspension mounts. Highly recommend that setup.

I did the fronts a little while ago. This time it’s the rears, and I’m going with 5100s again. It should be a much simpler install than the fronts. I thought I could compress the springs on my own, didn’t work. Took it to NAPA and they did it in no time.

Huhh never knew that NAPA would do that for you. I have had really bad luck with places not wanting to touch parts I bring them. Had a real hard time with the upper control arm bushings not wanting to come out, ever after hitting them with a torch.
Rears weren’t too bad. Assuming you have a first gen, j ack the truck way up, then jack it up a little bit higher . You will want a ratcheting box wrench to tighten the top nut. I recommend you remove the spare tire for the time being so you have some more room to work.

Napa does all sorts of machining - you name it, if it’s car related, they do it.
Thanks for the info for the rear shocks. We’ll see how the weather is - I’m in no rush to swap them.

Moog makes some of the best suspension parts. I have moog tie rods and sway links on an 05 tundra quad cab. Had the so far a couple years. Dorman makes good aftermarket parts to. A shop that did work on my truck said they use dorman or moog.

Thanks! I have a feeling that I’ll be shopping there again soon... at 132k miles, I probably need to look into control arms.
