What "jacket" won't you wear?

I wrote this in response to Tom’s GM article on the front page, and am wondering what great cars are out there than you just can’t see yourself ever owning?

It’s very challenging to change someone’s feelings about a model or brand.

I often refer to automobiles like jackets that we choose to buy and wear. The coat that might be the best value and most optimal for what we need , is rarely the style or brand that we want. I wish that I could love the Camaro SS 1LE, but when it comes down to it, it’s just a “jacket” I can’t see myself wearing...

Maybe people should buy what they need, but they buy what they want.

I drive a BMW, and am well-aware of the stigma that c omes with that, but am willing to accept i t to enjoy the fantastic dynamics of the car (and to regularly rev it out past 8000...). A friend of mine just bought a Raptor, and I told him before he did that lots of people on the road will consider him a douchebag just because he owns it.

What say you OPPO? What car do you wish you could own, but know you never will, either because it just doesn’t “fit” you and your style, or because you couldn’t deal with others’ perception of you because of it ?

If you care about other’s perception of you, then you might cross off many cars.

I  for one, only care about car’s reliability and absolutely cannot stand having to fix shit on a car daily.

For this reason, I absolutely hate C5 corvette I own (but love how loud and fast it is) . I hated Suburban I had (but also loved it for its space)

A Beige jacket

which also applies to any FWD Lexus of any shape/size/form. However, does not apply to the new Honda Accord 2.0T or Mazda 6 Signature.

As mentioned in an earlier post , I don’t think there is anything to gain from not wearing a “jacket” or continuously wearing the same one. You don’t know if a car is great or not by the people you think drive it or the stereotypes spouted off in car communities . You find out by driving it and seeing if it aligns with what you like/want in a car .

I couldn’t do a beige- mobile. Camry, Carolla, Ci vic, Dart, 200, Maxima, Jetta, any of the entry level crossovers....

Sure they're perfectly fine A to B cars, but I would probably hate myself for giving up and buying something solely for *reliability*, *efficiency*, *common sense*, etc.

I definitely agree, but there are some cars that I just could never get on board with the styling, regardless of how good they are to drive  (BFA in graphic design...). I will say, there are some cars, like the Evo and STi for example, where my perception changed with time because of just how impressive they perform.

Kia, even moreso than Hyundai, I could never live with. Not necessarily because of the car, but Kia drivers are either old ladies or douche-bros with a JDM badge on their Optima.

If I were buying new and had stupid money, you’d better bet it would be spent on Lexus, BMW, or Mercedes. Cadillac means to me: I want to look like a baller but can’t afford it. Unless it’s an XTS and then you just look like a grandpa. Lincoln too, in some aspects. However, my perception is changing in regards to Caddy and Lincoln’s CUVs (the XT4 and MKC are really stellar) so maybe brands have hope.

I agree with you on Camaro. I would even go as far as calling it horrible. High belt lines. Poor visibility and to boot, it tried killing me.

I rented one with wife in Florida. Automatic. Whatever! I said. Making a u turn on a somewhat busy roads. Cars out in a distance but not too far. Damn thing stalls on me. Automatic. Stalls on me. Power steering gone. Brakes miserable. I made the u turn half way - basically a left turn... into a residential street where kids were playing baring getting out of the way of the oncoming cars.

Stern talking with rental company. They took that clunker away and gave me a miata. We had trouble putting my wallet in the trunk, but it was a fun little car. Camaro had less than 3000 miles on it.
Sad really for GM.

Despite owning particularly “stereotypy” cars.... I just can’t deal with Cadillacs.

I can’t... like, it’s got nothing to do with the engineering; they’re really good, it’s the styling and the brand image.

I feel that new Cadillacs are driven, exclusively, by extroverts who are insecure about their finances.

But think about it for a moment... Who can simultaneously be insecure about their finances and also afford a brand  new Cadillac? very few people!

They might be attracted to a Cadillac because their design is meant to look super expensive and their history as the American luxury car. BMW, Mercedes, and Audi do it too, but I feel that those brands don’t have such a heavy handed connotation to wealth as Cadillac tries to impose upon the public with the styling.

He’s got a C7 now, while it’s a huge step up from a C6, it’s going to age real bad as well. 5 years from now it’s going to look trashy and overdone.

i feel this way about almost anything newer and flashy, as I drive a lot of client cars and they’re just not me. They may be amazing cars (almost none are, because I’m jaded to hell, but they could be...) , but they’re not me. Of course, I feel really self-conscious about the 911 too, like I’m automatically the asshole at any intersection. I know I’m not, and fuck ‘em because I love the thing and they don’t know that I’ve worked on it for 22 years and it’s been around the world 9 times and is 35 years old and scruffy from less than 10 feet away , but I do feel that people are judging me for wearing a studded leather jacket and blue sunglasses . About the only vehicles I’ve ever felt really at home in are old trucks like the fugly little Nissan hardbody I daily now . The super-patina Fairlane was like that too, actually. There’s no pretense there, they fit me like a well broken-in flannel shirt. I’ll feel comfortable with myself in the 911 eventually, but not yet.

Every convertible that isnt a Miata. I dont think there is a single non-miata convertible out there that is supposed to be simple and non-luxury. For some reason it is always way too complex and only really sold for the purpose of being some sort of luxury. I enjoy the Miata because it is a car that is great, independent of being a vert and then that is just an added bonus. While I always think that top down life is the best, I just could never bring myself to own another drop top other than a Miata (s2k and t-topped cars being the only exceptions really). Even when the others are done kind of right, the top mechanisms are just way way over complicated. There needs to be more manual tops out there!

Perception of others, not at all.  I did, after all, buy a luxury Kia.  But, there are so many cars I’d like to own but never will because of the “fit”.  First on that list is a Miata.  I just can’t afford a purely fun car that can only ever fit one person. There are several other cars, like the Camaro, that fit my style on certain days and moods, but not on others enough to justify the financial outlay.  I hold out hope that Turo might scratch that itch if I ever get the chance.

I feel like this to a few GM vehicles. They got really close, but ultimately missed the mark. Every new Caddy I’ve been in has mediocre sprinkled throughout the interior in noticeable ways. I really do like to drive the new Camaro. I really wanted to award it my PRCOTY but it’s too damned cramped with bad storage. I’ve never driven the C7, it seems like it would be fun, but every time I look inside one, I think to myself, meh, and move on.

There aren’t really any cars where the perception or stereotypical owner has turned me off. I just don’t really care about that kind of thing. I will say that I understand it, though. I NEVER tell people I have a Ferrari , unless they are a hardened car nut. Even then, I usually add like 30 qualifiers to downplay it. I do this because I’ve seen so many people change their opinion about m e once they know I have a Ferrari. I’m damn proud that I was able to get that car but it’s easier for me just not to bring it up. It’s not something I should care about, but for some reason I do.

It’s my Dad’s “Hero” jacket. He moved to Malaysia a few weeks ago and left this behind, so I immediately pilfered it from his closet and wear it proudly every day. Weirdly, although I’m considerably taller than him, it it fits perfect. (5’9” or 10” vs 6’ 2” or 3”).

Those hobbies add up quick! I’ve ridden a few $10k mountain bikes during demo days and they were insanely awesome. I get why someone would spend that much but it’s not for me. I don’t see how someone could spend that much on bikes/skis and be completely dumbfounded why you would spend money on a fun car haha

Probably. Unless an old Miata counts as “great.” Other than that I can’t see myself putting down the kind of money a “great car” requires for the foreseeable future, unless my financial situation changes drastically for the better. Not that it’s bad, but priority #1 right now is saving for a house, which like everything else in my millenial life became ridiculously expensive before  I started seriously looking into acquiring one.

Old, cheap cars can be great. I’m thinking a well-maintained 200k+ Acura Legend.

Very smart to save and invest in a home instead of spending too much for a car that will just depreciate. Are house prices ridiculous where you live, or have they just recently gotten that way? If there’s a serious downtown soon (everyone seems to think there will be), prices may come down and it might be the perfect time to buy.

I love a good M3, but it’s funny how color changes the way you feel about it. I had a fair bit of wheel time in a buddy’s Laguna Seca blue E46 coupe over a few years , and though the car was brilliant, I always felt like a tool at stoplights .

I’m stoked on the little Nissan, as I was on my old F150 and old Toyota before that. Just good vehicles that do their thing. And like your awesome 1502 acquisition , being comfortable in the beater Nissan and ridding myself of other vehicular hang-ups has partially enabled my dream beater 911SC.

So stoked for you on the 1502, I really dig that another Oppo is picking up an 02 just as I’ve sold mine after having them for over 20 years. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!

My feeling exactly, and Matt Hummel sets the bar . He, Josh yRobots with his 911 and Mark Pribanic with his 356 are setting a high standard for  living Porsche life properly. I hope a little of that mojo rubs off as I get into it, was cool to have Josh around here for awhile, great people and that car is the best.

I rode a Harley* for several years and loved every second of it, so I understand being seen as one of “those guys”, but it made me happy so screw ‘em. I’m not opposed to driving anything due to an image, but there are a few vehicles or types of vehicles that just never piqued my interest.

The revived retro Camaro is one, I think it looks ok, and I believe that it’s an amazing car, but it always felt, to me, like it was trying to hard and made too many compromises. It just doesn’t feel like a car you could live with every day IMO.

Same goes for the Corvette, except the C7. I love the C7, but any other Corvette doesn’t even get a second glance. The C4 is ok I guess, but only because it’s the redheaded step child of Corvettes.

(Hot take time). Pretty much every Japanese luxury type sporty car. Your Lexus LS blah blah blah................... I honestly can’t think of anything else because that’s how little they interest me, but basically any of those “underrated” Japanese sport coupes/sedans. I fully believe that they’re wonderful cars and great to drive etc. but I everytime they come up in a search I always find something that I find more interesting. Maybe I should just drive one sometime to experience one.

4 Door Wranglers, I’ve driven them, I think they’re fun, but the Bro image is hard to overcome, I like them done up in proper overl anding getup, but then there’s a lot of other vehicles I’d rather have.

Bro-Trucks, I love me a nicely lifted truck with some good looking wheels, but it’s so hard to do one right without being considered as just another asshole in a lifted truck.

*Only a Sportster 883, but still counts to me because it made me want another Harley someday. Yes it was loud, bought it that way, I liked the way it sounded though and did everything I could to not be obnoxious on it. I eventually put a bit quieter set of pipes on it after the hack job brackets from the PO broke.

Love it. I’ve got a “second” of one of this guy’s replica 917 shift knobs sitting on my desk - http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/810768-917-style-inspired-shift-knobs.html - I’m looking forward to having a car that it will fit in one day.

Here’s my dad and his soon-to-be-wife (my mom) with his Super 90 that he brought back to Texas from Germany . =)

Yea LSB, PY, Techno Violet...I love the intense colors on the E46 I honestly wouldn’t buy another one that wasn’t a rad color. They attract more positive attention than negative and the negative attention is almost always from people in beige-mobiles, still I’d rather no attention haha.

Got any pics of your 911? Is it the white one from your shop ?

Thanks! Right after I bought the 1502, a 911 that had my name all over it went up for sale. Way out of my budget but still, funny how that happens. I’m over the moon excited to get the 02, I’ve been showing pics to all of my buddies that care about cars (even some who don’t) and everyone’s jaw has hit the floor.

The loud colors do look best , techno violet hnnngg... Love the colors when I’m looking, but not being looked at!

The 1502 looks so bitchin’. My first 02 was Bristol Gray, and I wanted to do dark green sides above the belt line, in about the same shade as yours. Love a good green, and the car looks really well set up!

The 911 is the one from the shop, here’s a better pic of it. Really should do a “this is me now” post since I’ve been less active lately, and my history  with  the 911. Gratuitous pic of Nissan too..

Love those wooden knobs, Josh periodically makes runs of them out of old skateboard decks, I definitely want one or the other.

What a great family pic! Love cool old family story black and whites like that, and the stories they tell. How long did he keep the car?

I saw that on Josh’s site - very cool!

He bought it used in Germany, brought it back to Texas and drove it for several years (saved his life - he was dozing off late one night and came to right before a bridge abutment - was able to swerve back on to the road and the bridge just in time). He met and married my mom, and they started having kids. Sold it after my oldest brother was born, sadly. Actually bought a 911 to replace it , but it was a bad purchase. Had been in a wreck and they only kept it a short time. VW Squareback after than and then a long line of beaters (I’m one of 6 kids). He’s 81 now, and has an old Lexus that he really likes. I’ve tried to convince him to buy one more sports car before he’s done driving, but I don’t see it happening. I have offered to rent him a Porsche on Turo to use some weekend; hopefully he’ll take me up on that soon.

I’m trying not to have another BMW be the next car I purchase, but they check so many boxes so well (especially when used). Le tting go of our Miata RF and Mazda3 5-door in 2019, replacing with a single car.

Hah, our budget is far below that. Considering our use case it brings up a lot of different options in the 4-door, AWD, small family hauler segment - Volvo XC60, BMW X 3, GMC Canyon / Toyota Tundra, Subaru Crosstrek (all used).

My wife is loving the  E91 wagon, so perhaps we will find a CPO F31 to join it.

I live in Portland, so house prices have been crazy for many years now. A few years ago a friend bought a small, one-level fixer- upper out near the airport for $350k cash.

My girlfriend and I are planning on moving out of the PNW entirely within the next year, partly on the hope that we’ll be  able to buy a house in a neighborhood we’d want to live in elsewhere.

Bummer the 356 or 911 didn’t stay around, but it seems you got the car bug either way! I was brought home from the hospital in a Squareback, coincidentally. Hope you can talk your pops into a Porsche rental, at least, if not parking something funner in the garage!

You’re spot-on with the interiors. The C7 is a huge step up in quality and refinement, but it sacrificed a sense of specialness the prior generations had. If you covered the corvette logo on the wheel and infotainment system on the interior of a C7 , the expensive sports car looks largely indistinguishable from any lower -end gm product, and could pass for a cruze coupe to someone who didn’t know that such a thing doesn’t exist.

Oh yes, “the sickness” is strong with me... That’s funny about the Squareback. I have no idea what I came home in (my oldest brother is 13 years older than me). I think we can make the rental happen, just have to remind him again.

So... I think you owe OPPO a full, lengthy write-up of your 911, amirite? [nudge]
