What Classic Car Interests You the Least?

It seems like most Oppos have eclectic tastes in cars, and can appreciate lost of different makes, models, generations , and styles of car.

But even if you do like most cars there is bound to be a few that that just don’ t get you excited. here’ s one of mine The third gen Mercedes SL. Especially in Cabriolet trim.

Kinja'd!!!

These cars do nothing for me. The aesthetics are uninspired to say the least. the American market bumpers dont do them any favors. it looks like a cheap Russian imitation of what it wars supposed to be.

Kinja'd!!!

Adding the Euro bumpers and headlights, and losing the chrome fender trim does help, but I still cant look at this and say “yes i want to own that”

Kinja'd!!!

So what classic car just doesn’t fill your beans (not a real expression)

Honestly, any GM. I just feel nothing for the brand and no vehicle they have ever made would be worth buying. I appreciate Corvettes, but would I own one? Not unless my dad has a jammer and I get his.

Kinja'd!!!

Even then, I am almost to tall to drive it. It was made for a short, 1960's dude.

CHANGE MY MIND OPPO.

Anything big and slow, I get why they’re cool and important but I don’t like.

I also share your sentiment about that particular generation of Mercedes SL, but go a little older and I love them.

....Honestly, all of them. The only classic car I have any feelings about is the Galaxie 500. And it has to be fastback and teal.

I have no feelings for anything else pre-1990s. Sorry.

Probably the classic mustang. Like yeah it looks kinda cool and the hertitage/history of it is important. But since driving it is supposed to be frightening/terrible I just cant appreciate it much. I feel this way about most classics just because I adore proper driving dynamics above all else. But that is definitely the poster child of it all.

I love old cars generally, but there are a few that just don’t interest me. Pony cars generally - the pony cars from the ‘60s are okay, the 1970+ pony cars don’t interest me at all.

And I’ll never understand the love some people have for ‘80s and ‘90s cars. I got my license in 1984, and hated new cars then, and still hate pretty much everything from that era.

Totally agree on the R107 Mercedes, too-  it’s a pig.

The SLs are all cabriolets and I would love to own one, especially a 450 or a 560. I had one to drive for a month two summers ago while a friend worked on my clownshoe and it was so fun to drive. That V8 has tons of torque and can easily get up to 140+, its got that beautiful hood, a smooth ride, and that big 80s style steering wheel thats awesome. The stock wheels on a lot of them are kinda ugly but thats an easy fix

Corvettes, and Corvairs are just about the only GM cars that get me excited. and even with Corvettes its pretty much the bang of the buck of late C4s and early C5s that makes me like them.

I wouldn’t say I am brand loyal, just that GM legitimately has never made a single vehicle I like. I appreciate they’ve made some good ones and that people love some of their cars, but I would never buy any over the competition.

I don’t have a favorite brand, but I have a few that do nothing for me.

Hot rod Tri-Chevies, 70s-80s style rods/customs of 30s-40s cars, lookalike Chevelles and similar. Cars that appeal most to a specific generation.

I’ve seen 107s called a “German Buick”, and that might be apt - they are certainly not sporty or light like a 113. Probably the least sporty SL. But if you look at it as a disco-chic boulevardier rather than a sports car, it fits better.  They never (as far as I know) left the assembly line with chrome fender trim.  I think the hardtop might have been optional at specific points in time and markets, but most should have it.

I think that all cars are a reflection of societal trends. Lemay: America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, WA is basically structured around that.

I think that the Corvette reflects what’s cool to one demographic.  But I do think it reflects what American’s idea of a performance car is from decade to decade.

I don’t think I have strong feelings one way or another towards most, but not all, classics. Enough for an appreciative nod and look over at a car show, but probably not go home and dream about.

I’ll go with Ferrari’s.  I don’t care that it won some random rally in the 60's.  All I see is an overpriced and unreliable machine that reminds me of all the reasons why I don’t like them as a company.

60's and 70's muscle cars just don’t do it for me. I can respect the 2nd and early 3rd gen Corvettes as sports cars with big engines, and I can get behind the no half-measures approach of going full land yacht in the form of big Lincolns and Cadillacs of the time (even the big Chryslers have an appeal to me), but few things interest me less than some boomer’s wet dream of a Charger, Mustang, Camero, Challenger, Chevelle, whatever... I’ve driven or been in enough of them to resent that despite making a great noise, most of them in stock form don’t even do particularly well the only thing they were supposed to... go fast in a straight line. There are few exceptions to this, like the very early Z/28 Camero that was basically a homologation special for Trans-Am racing.

It is funny how modifications can make something more interesting. Actually what started the idea for this thread was that I found a 5 00 dollar shell of an old SL and thought, ‘I could make a cool, super low, rat road thing out of that” and then immediately thought “that’s the first time I’ve looked at one of those and been remotely interested in one of those.”

My dead spot in classic cars are concours level surviving american brands.

They are so plentiful and hardly even used being show cars that once youve seen one you’ve got a solid idea about what to expect for the next couple decades. I dont care if its the only one made that year with those options, the one 4 spaces down looks identical except the AC controls and neither one is driving farther than the trailer home.

This. For me, nostalgia and nice noises don’t compensate from them generally being terrible to drive machines.

The fact is that my sister’ s 2016 V6 mustang (with a manual) is a faster car than the vast majority of those muscle cars, and being an S550 it is actually a legitimately good handling car, stops well, gets nearly 30mpg on the highway, and is otherwise very good at generally being a car. To be fair, in her V6 base trim with tall, narrower soft sidewall tires and softer base suspension make it a better 9/10ths car on a twisty canyon road, as it loses some composure at 10/10 ths. The performance package suspension S550s that I’ve driven rectify this problem.

Also this! The magic of Oppo is that everyone here usually is excellent to each other. The spectrum of interests on Oppo is big enough that there aren’t silos, and we embrace the variety. There are folks here into cars I don’t care for at all, but I respect that they’re into them and I’m glad we get a glimpse of their particular flavor madness to complement our own.

The saltiest car place I’ve seen on the internet are corvette forums. There is some great information on them, but those guys are quicker to start calling each other assholes than any other place I’ve browsed.

Back in the day, g1teg.org circa 2003 reminded me a little bit of Oppo. It was certainly silo’d on 1st gen Integras, but everyone there was generally excellent to each other, and there were some folks that posted a fair amount off topic on other cars they owned that folks were interested in reading about.

Actually, I have another classic car that interests me even less than classic muscle cars: The MGB.

My disrespect for these cars is rooted in my mechanical mentor being a classic British car guy. The MGB would’ve been a fantastic 50's sports car, but the problem was that MG for some reason built a 50's sport car in the 60's, and even worse was that they kept building them into the 70's and beyond, and people kept buying them. By the 60's, Triumph , Jaguar and Lotus to name just a few   offered sports cars that were superior in every way to the MGB.

I do confess to understanding the visual appeal of the MGB GT, but whenever it is expressed on Oppo I try to remind folks that the Triumph GT6 was a superior car in every way. . I can get behind the Midget, and even the very, very pretty MGA (a 50's sports car built in the 50's, even it did have an engine from the 40's ) , but I don’t get the lust for the MGB. The only thing worse is the typical MGB owner wanking on about how great they think their car is. I do see some hope in that some of them are now being bought by younger owners that may be less likely to go for cruises to meet for breakfast and pontificate . They’re only good if haven’t experienced any of the better British sports cars of the time.

I like some newer cars, but I feel like we have passed the peak - new cars are quicker, but they’re all heavier, number (thanks electric PS!), and overly tech laden.

And all of that is just going to keep getting worse...

I dig both of those.  I don’t desire a spitfire, but there is some circumstance possible where I would find future garage space for a GT6.

Yeah the MGB GT used to be my favorite British car, until I learned about the GT6
