I am trying to sell a few bicycles and I have no idea how much to ask. The world of bicycles is very foreign to me. The only thing I know about them is how to make it move.

First up is a Specialized Hard Rock Sport in Aluminum.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

17" frame, 26" tires, 24 speed, gel seat cover, adjustable front suspension. Could use new tires and the cable guide on the bottom is broken.

Next is a K2 ZED 4.9. 21" frame, 29" tires, Aluminum frame, disc brakes, probably needs tires.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Last is an Aberdale. An old English built bike. 21" frame, 26" tires, 1 or possibly 3 speed (see pictures), Needs restoration but has quality components. Aluminum rack by Koba(Japan), leather seat by Assmann?(Austria), Sturmey Archer shifter?, Brampton cranks, Western Flyer pedals, and Monitor Sheerline brakes. Very cool old bike, kind of tempted to keep it.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

What is this and how does it work? You have a 3 position selector on the handlebar that runs to the back hub, is it internal gears?

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Oh, and 2 24.5" Reynolds Alta Race wheels

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Please educate me Oppo. What would you list these for and what are some listing tips for bicycle stuff?

For the Specialized and the K2, I would ask $100 each, settle for $75 if they don’t sell for a few weeks. You might be able to get a little more for the K2 because disc brakes, could try asking $150.

The Aberdale, ask $250 and see what bites you get.

No clue on the wheels.

Just a few things to note, this will vary significantly based on your region and what’s up for sale in the area. Now isn’t the best time of year to be selling bikes, so if you could hold onto them until spring, your chances might be slightly better.

As for the Hardrock, Specialized’s entry-level MTB, this one is showing its age via components. 26" wheels, 3x8 drivetrain, v-brakes, I’d guess mid 2000's? Might be doing good to get $150 for it in perfect working order, but that’s just a guess. YMMV.

The K2 is also pretty entry level, maybe $200-250 for that guy with the disc brakes and 29er wheels? Also just a guess, YMMV.

No idea on the Aberdale. And yes, it has a 3-spd internal hub which works with a series of planetary gears. Sturmey used to make respectable components but I’m not too familiar with them.

As for the track wheelset, it looks pretty well used. If the wheels are true, maybe $100?

Again, just guessing here. YMMV as always, plus market and seasonal variations, so be flexible! Bicycle blue book is sometimes a good starting point, but I think it’s off in most cases.

Thats about what I expected, except that Aberdale is a complete puzzle.

Do you know if bike shops often buy/consign used bikes?

No ideas on the pricing, but yeah, that’s an internally geared hub 3-speed: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/english-3.html

Bicycle blue book is a thing, and it should help. Bikes seem to be in decent condition, so start at blue book?

I dont really have anything in order to help, but I do have a story about selling a bike. I had a cheap mountain bike (maybe like $300 when new) that I had bought “used” (basically never ridden and just in a garage) for $75 from Craigslist. I rode it around a lot of trails for about 3 years and then decided to sell it since I was moving. I listed it for $125 on Craigslist to see if could get the $75 I spent on it. Some bozo came along and paid me asking price, not even trying to get a few dollars off. It was still in decent shape and had good tires on it but it was definitely a bit more scraped up than when I bought it. I just never have experienced that from Craigslist before.

Usually you at least get the fuckers trying to get $20 off the price “just because they can”. If something is priced appropriately, its not required to haggle for haggling sake. I nearly wanted to turn away a buyer for a Honda I was selling for that reason. Who haggles $20 off of a car sale?? It was a fucking pain just to make change...

Some shops might, but generally there isn’t enough margin in used bicycles to make it worth their time. You could start by calling one local shop and asking if they sell/consign. If not, ask them if they know of any shops in the area that do, but I’d have low expectations for this.

I think your best bet here would be to post up on CL with an “ OBO” or “asking price” and maintain a your flexibility. Unless you’ve got the new hotness in the cycling world, you’re probably going to have to play the CL haggler or lowballer game for a bit, particularly in this season.

Id start at 150 and 200 for the k2.  A new bike like those are probably like 300 and 500.  The old one I have no idea.  Could be worth something as a collector /hipster bike

Sometimes I’ll do this. If I think the item is priced well and in good shape as described, I might pay asking price. Particularly if the seller is being honest, easy to communicate with,  and not giving me the runaround- I’d pay $20 for that alone, especially if we’re taking about a $200-800 item.

Well yeah, it just seemed funny to me as it is rare to run into that on the seller side. I guess I buy more stuff than I sell on the used market but it still just struck me odd at first.

https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/

I used this and local Craigslist when I was pricing mine. All of the blue book pricing was too low based in colorado prices and I was able to sell all my bikes for more than their prices, but it was also middle of summer when I sold them.

The two modern bikes aren’t worth much but that’s not what I’m interested in.

My bet is that the old bike is a Gresham Flyer from the 1950's. Google tells me that Raleigh owned the Aberdare brand by this time and imported a model so named to the US. The pic I’ve seen shows a frame with very similar geometry.

However, your bike has a different stem and bar off what appears to be an even earlier bike (these two parts may be worth something on their own - see if you can find maker’s marks) which throws the actual geometry right off. The frame also appears to be resprayed. In all honesty, it’s probably not worth more than a hundred and that’s if you can confirm it’s what it is... However, that frame should ride very nicely with a proper stem and bar that would suit it...check out Rivendell or Nitto for something that’ll suit.

The orange one is worth about $40, plus shipping, and you can send it to me and my agent, who is a Nigerian prince, will fax you a money order.
